can anyone tell me there opinions or what they know about toyota automatic transmissions in these pick ups in the early 90"s because im finding that all the extra cabs are mostly automatic. iv been looking for a manual but am considerig a few auto's if you guys say there ok. i just feel that its cheeper to work on a manual tranny if something goes bad but an automatic would be a bummer to fix. especially soon after buying...thanks guys:waytogo::confused:

I prefer manual. If you want to do any type of stunt driving or drifting or whatever it's better. If I had an auto I know that I would be looking for power when hitting a pass. I would be shifting into low a lot. I don't think it is good to shift an auto like that so it probably wouldn't last as long.
Of course a tranny swap could be a future mod if desired. And I am pretty sure people don't like autos with our trucks when they go turbo. And the autos don't like people.:runaway:

It is cheaper and easier to work on a manual. But Ive heard that besides being slower than dog piss, the auto is bulletproof.

Like I said ive "heard". So yea.

    I can vouch for that.

1year of "manually shifting the auto" pretty much ATE my fluid. so just keep it in D lol

The A43D found in my 22RE automatic has been pretty strong so far. Bulletproof? I think so, i mean hey, it's in the hands of a teenager who gave it some ****ing abuse.

My first few months driving this thing, I can't remember how many times I have clutch dropped it.

I CANNOT count HOW MANY TIMES I downshift blipped the automatic when i was coming to a stop.
sounded great when i had an open exhaust.

Slowing down from 45mph to 0, I put the shifter into L as it hits 39mph, that's where it shifts into 1st, I blip my throttle and damn it sounded great :D

Anyway, auto's are "neat" in their own way, but a manual would last wayyy longer.

Mine's only 170k old, but if you change the fluid and make sure it stays red and get a periodic fluid flush, you should be good.

And you're looking for an xcab. I say JUST GRAB A GOOD ONE. you should swap to manual later down the road.

My truck came with a 3.0 and an auto trans. The only problem I was having when I first got the truck was that it didn't want to shift into overdrive. After doing some research I found that it won't shift into O/D unless the motor reachs a certain operating temp. I changed the thermostat out for one with a higher range and haven't had a problem since. I would have loved to get this truck with a manual but it came with an auto so that's what I'm stuck with. Honestly though, this tranny has been working great and I don't miss shifting when driving through the city. ;)

    91 xcab...
My 91 extra-cab orginally came with an automatic transmission & I never had a problem with it. I espically loved it while cruising or sitting in traffic lol. The only reason I swapped it out for a 5-speed is that when I installed my newer engine it came with the manual transmission. So now Ive got a 5-speed & yea its awesome, but I do miss my automatic sometimes.
