I have some Hella 550s. I am going to hook them up with a rocker switch in the cab. But what is the best way to hook them up? Should I use a solonoid or what? I want to do it right.

how many watts are they? depending on the draw of current on your system you could get by with a wiring harness, if they draw allot of current a soleniod would probably be best

    I think they're 55 watt.

And it is only an OEM alternator. I might need a better alternator. Especially since I want to add a stereo later.
What type of solonoid will I need to use?

run a relay and a fuse. but put the switch on the ground side so you dont need to run hot wires into the cab.

    hella

I bought a Hella brand relay. It has 5 terminal posts on it. I still need an in line fuse, but I might have one in my stereo supplies.
Now to figure out how to put it all together. I would guess that the fuse needs to be on the power supply (between battery and relay). What size fuse? And then 2 wires go from the relay to the lights. 3 posts used....
Then I should connect the lights together. And run a ground wire from the light with 3 wires to the switch in the cab. And then back to a good ground on the chassis.

I don't hook up lights often so does this sound like it will work? Did I get the wrong relay? Or can I just use it and add more lights someday?

Oh. Wow thank you so much. The Hella Comet 550s each have 2 wires on them. One of them is a ground and it is only 3-4inches long. It ground on the same bolt that is on the light for mounting purposes. So that just leaves me with one wire for each light, a Hella 5 post relay, and a switch. Thank You

    Thankyou

Ya that's exactly what I needed. I feel better about the reliablility of my lights now.
I have a Hella H41388461 relay. It looks like the one in the pic. It has a post in the middle labelled 87a. Since 87 goes to the light I am assuming 87a could be used for a second set of lights.

Well i got it all hooked up exactly like the diagram. Only I have a 5 amp fuse in the kick panel box. I used the cig lighter (normally 15 amp fuse). I have a 20 amp fuse between battery and relay.
So my 20 amp fuse burns out after a few seconds of switching the lights on. What could be the problem:shrug:
Probably an easy fix but I don`t know what to look for.

probably you need one of those audio quality fuses, or if you notice the fuses of your headlights are like 32V fuses, try using those type and 20 amp...
