What is the diff between long tube headers and short headers? Any help looking in to buying some

Long time consenses long tube full length headers are overall more efficient at using exhaust scavaging And give the broadest of power increase thru the power band . Due to there exceptional flow . At all rpm ranges

Shorties are a lot like oem exhaust manifolds with large primary's and good flow pepole tend to say they are a mid range and high range header .. The scavaging effect is not as big on shorties because the primaries are short and exhaust pulses don't work together to increase scavaging . Not a bad thing a lot supercharged guys like shorties( v8 guys that is ) they will work just fine on a 22r

Best advice I can give is no matter wich style you choose there both an improvement over stock it's not just the style of header it's also primary pipe size and collector lengths and patterns . That make good headers ..
I here obx stainless header fits well and flows ..for cheap .plus it's stainless there are many brands to choose from ...stainless or ceramic will last the longest

On a side note shorties on my lt1 make no gains at all while long tubes average 25 horses with 3 inch y pipe no cats and a retune ecu ..

    scrub pretty much nailed it.

made a very noticeable difference in my 3tc corolla when i did their 4-1 header...

just out of personal preference, i like the 4-1 header design best over the tri-y design. ran em in a couple trucks and never liked em. also, downey used to make THEE best headers too.... i havent run a lce header in a while but i liked downey's over lce... too bad downey went under.

I have a pace setter on my truck. It hangs about 1.5" below frame level at the collector, but its close enough to the tire that it rarely drags. But its been lots of rarelys over 5 years lol. I think I ordered one for a 4wd 80 though. My cousin had a celica header on his truck, had to mod the collector a bit to clear the firewall.

The reason I got a pace setter was it was one of the cheaper 4-1s. But it had the largest primaries of all that I found. 1-5/8" primaries and a 2.5" collector. 20r and 22r engines make tons of torque, so don't worry about any potential loses by swapping to one. Shifting the powerband higher helps with launches and getting traction from a stop.

yea... downey's had a 1-5/8 primary as well... but they were street legal too.

i think lce since then upgraded to the same size primaries and collectors.

I'm kinda waiting on someone to bite the bullet and order this obx stainless .. The celiac guys seem to praise it .as it is a copy of LC header .. And have seen and watch obx grow from a eBay Honda header into a competitive company now . Even the v8 rwd cars are waiting on back orders for these things now that would have been unheard of 5 years ago ... If didn't already have a header I'd get one . Cause price is just right for stainless

Another factor with headers long/ short tubes is to get the most out of headers they should be equal length tubes, the reason there are long tube headers!! Each tube must be the same length!!

yea... i know the stock 3vz and 5vz for that matter is horribly designed to run behind the motor creating a seriously hot engine bay area back there... downey, (back in the day) and LCE run them down with a long tube setup and a Y pipe connector down stream...

its a nice setup but they still ran around 500-700 depending on who you got em through... its a pricey upgrade but ive been told the gains are pretty significant...

as far as i know yes they do fit. ive used a newer header on an older motor without issues... the only issue you may run into is the air injection manifold design between some of the years..

I've run lots of mismatched headers. Hangingow has been the worst if the problems. Frame clearance should be the same between the two. I've run 4wd and celica headers on trucks so you should be okay.
