Just like the title says, has anyone ever done this? My bracket keeps breaking and I'm about to switch back to stock stuff.. Unless someone knows what needs to be done to use the smog pump bracket.. I'm clueless about it.
It's pretty simple. Hang one ear off the bottom, modify the slide bracket to work. Few bends is all it should take. I've test fitted a bunch of GM alts that way and they seem to fit. It's on my mod list. Keeps the alt away from the header heat.
Whats the GM bracket made out of? Could you take some scrap pieces and gusset it up so it won't break again?
It's a piece of 3/8" plate with a bend, and a little piece of 1/4" welded on.. I've just decided to not try again and switch it to the smog bracket.. It'll be easy, I have the top and bottome mount still so I'll just mod the top to work.. The bracket that broke literally broke in half..
I've never had a truck with a smog pump so I put the alternator on the drivers side like the factory. I always build my own brackets out of the stock stuff. The upper gets cut and rewelded with the adjustment slot moved out an inch and the lower is an early style lower with the mount ear cut off and a parts store chrome mount welded onto it.
Mine didn't come with a smog pump, just the brackets.. The upper bracket was actually helping hold the battery.. My plan is to use a bunch of washers on the sides to get the pulley to line up then mod the upper bracket to work. I don't want to mod the lower, I don't want to take a chance that I make a weak spot for it to break.
Well it worked!!! it feels so good to drive my truck again! Ended up having to grind some of the mount to make clearance for the belt, still ended up with only about 1/8"... And the top mount got cut up and re welded a couple times. But it works!
