Have you checked the fuses and fuel pump relay? Do you have a volt meter?

relay is under dash along steering wheel if i remember correctly and most common problem is a bad ground. make sure the oil pressure switch is unplugged and turn the ignition to on position.... u should here the pump if u have good power/ground. almost never is the relay. good luck

I have had plenty of experience with the poor design of fuel delivery system on my 78. In fact I can remove that tank in less than 5 minutes! So, I totally agree with the above statement that it is probably not the relay, although it is possible. Definately pull the oil PSI electrical connector and see if you can hear the pump run. What I eventually did was installed an in-line PSI indicator in the engine bay to help assist in trouble shooting. Certainly check the ground and power but I would imagine if you werent messing with the tank lid, the ground should be intact, which then leaves the pump that is in the tank. They sell pumps for the 78 toyota truck and make sure, if that is the route you go, that you install a filter screen with the pump or use the old one. While you are in there, look at the check valve that sits right above the fuel pump on the sender in the tank. Pick at it, blow compressed air through it, or remove it entirely because after all the years of sediment it can malfunction. Mine caused me the most problem, which is where the PSI indicator came into play. I eventually got all the crud that had accumulated out and is is installed back in the tank.
Please post what you all find... It helps others.

    good luck! and.....

    CHEERS!

p.s. the relay is on the right side of the stearing column, up underneath, attached to the framing that mounts the stearing wheel cylinder. At least thats where mine is mounted and my truck is hardly molested, in other words very stock, no mods to the interior...

Thanks, I found the relay and could hear it click when I turned on the ignition, so I assume it is good, also replaced the fuel pump last week, old one was pretty gunked up, cleaned and kept the screen though.

It is weird, I have had problems with the fuel pump since I first umplugged it to fix the tank. When I reinstalled it, it didnt run, so I accidentally left the ignition on for an hour and it magically turned on. It worked fine until the battery cable came loose and the electrics cut out. Fixed the cable, but as soon as that happened, the fuel pumped never really worked again. On a side note the charging light turned on the same time. Whole thing seems fishy
