Anyone know if there's a replacement bar? The stocker is what, 18mm? That's .7", maybe there's a 1" bar? Looks like the bar is the same up to '94? That's all I could find online besides bushings. That would help it be more stable after lowering it.
A later model (like 84-94 ish) either had an optional bar or it came with the v6.(maybe 1 tons too) Something like that. Anyways its 24 mm. A little bigger than our wussy factory ones. Just find one at the JY and grab the rubber bushings while your at it. It is a night and day differance for ~15 bucks. Bolts right on with the bushing that came with the bar. It is better than the one you have, make no mistake. But it wont turn your truck into a tire chunking handling machine.
no it won't help that but at least I won't scrape the door handles quite as bad with a bigger sway bar! Thanks for the info!
OK - I found a 4wd sway bar for $25. It's the larger bar, but would that fit my truck? I'm not sure but I would figure that the 4wd bar would be shaped different, since it's front end is different. Any idea?
I had bars made from Quickor Engineering, still need to get the front one remade ,now that my ride is bagged & running custom a-arms! These bars are chrome-molly spring steel, the front one mounts from the rear forward,& they are very thick,& improve handing very well!
the 1 ton models had beefy sway bars. 1" i think. i've been looking for one myself because i dont have anything under the front of my truck
try and get a sway bar off the 3rd gen trucks..89-95. they are thicker than the 84-88 models. they are formed the same but different size. I would recommend getting new sway bar links and bushings when installing one from the junkyard. But if u can afford it i would just get one off ebay, front is $173~ and rears cost $150~..just my .02
Dumb question, but do you have to remove the whole front end to swap the sway bar???? I tried to pull the old one and can't get it out because the torsion rods are in the way. If I have to get them out of the way I guess i'm waiting until I replace the front bushings to do the sway bar!
So if you could find front and rear sway bars out of a toyota camper would those work too and are they beefier??
The stock 95.5 -04 Tacoma sway bar is 25mm, so I'd have to check a earlier one for it's size. The Taco guys like the 28mm Addco aftermarket front one,(or 28mm s-runner one) not sure if they have a pre 95 replacement one or not .
Its not hard. Just that the bigger bar is a PITA to get around the torsion bars. Id reccomend pulling one.
Yea I tried for a while to get it out and couldn't manuever it enough to slide it out... the larger one would have been impossible!!! I'm just gonna wait until I redo the front bushings now.
I was wondering the same thing...knowing Toyota and their constant changes , I'm going to take a guess and say no.
From what I found they don't, but there are 23mm and 25mm bars on the newer 89-95 trucks and they bolt right on. Both are larger than the stock 18mm and a major improvement. A few of the members here have done the swap, and I have a 23mm I'm swapping on when I get the old one out!!
do the 83ish dolphins have bigger swaybars? what about rear sway bars do they have one and will it bolt on to the same rear of truck?
On that same topic, did the old 78-back frame'd rvs have a rear sway bar at all? Or a larger front? Since the whole front frame is different. Rear could be adapted i bet.
