    hey guys,

i'm new here as you can probably guess.
i've got an 04 hilux which is already dropped and looking alright, just wanting to do a few other things to it, next on the list is exhaust.

right now it sounds pretty average and just stock. what would be the best way to get it sounding a little nicer and louder?
    extractors? straight through? anything

    any feedback would be good,

    cheers.

04 would be a Tacoma. But a Toyota nun-the-less. Try an aftermarket K&N intake pipe. It will give you a nicer revving sound and a small hp boost. And if you got the money some headers with Flowmaster. On Guam we can we can clear out the catalidic and that changes the sound. I don't know if that's possible down under though.

Ive never liked the sound of a Flowmaster on a small engine. I dont really like flowmaster period.

If you want a nice tone, go with a slightly bigger pipe and a magnaflow.

loud with a ok tone, cat->glasspack-> tailpipe

Stupid loud and abnoxious, no cat straight pipe

Im running a magnaflow cat and an SLP stainless muffler and its a nice tone, but im running magnaflow mufflers on everything else I own and I like them better than the flowmasters. More mellow sound in my opinion.

I use to run Flowmaster when I had my v8 Mustang. I ran dumps so my exhaust stopped right about where the front seats were. It was stupid loud but sounds so nice. My friend tried doing the same thing on his v6 mustang and I honestly couldnt even tell he had a Flowmasters exhaust.

I cant even imagine what it would sound like with a tiny 4banger. I think bumping up to an exhaust that is close to 2.5inches would make it sound better with an intake.

But I agree with homegrown, if you got the money start from the engine and work your way back. Intake, header, cat-delete, muffler. It all depends on what type of sound and how loud you are trying to get to.

Just remember enless you have mass horsepower a 4banger will never sound like a v8.

    cheers for the feedback guys!
because im still on P plates here in Australia and am not allowed to have any performance enhancing exhaust unless i want defect, i'll have to be careful how stupid i go. will start by heading down to my local muffler place and get some info down there. starting with intake and headers sounds like a good idea, wont have cops scratching their heads too much.

magnaflow sounds like the go, if i can find a seller in OZ.

by 'deleting' your cat do you mean gutting all of the sh*t out from the inside of it, or do you mean completely removing it?

You can hollow out a Cat but a cat-delete is completely removing the Cat from the exhaust system. So what you would be doing is cutting the Cat out and replacing it with a little bit of pipe.

That will allow your exhaust to flow so much better but it will throw all of your emissions out the window. It will be very loud too.

So gutting the cat does make a fair difference? By law down here you need a cat, theyre pretty strict on it too so i might just gut it. Are they hard to get off and put back in again? Or will i just need to angle grind it and weld it back again?

It depends if its welded or clamped on. Im going to assume its welded on so yes take an angle grinder and cut it off. make sure you cut it off 6-10" away from the cat to leave room. In Auzy do they require you to get emissions or smog testing? If so by doing all this work you WILL fail the tests.

yeah that's my dilema with emissions.
i'm getting my car serviced next week, and ive gotta decide whether im going to change the exhaust 'DIY' style and gutting the cat, or whether i will just pay the service place to put on some different exhaust parts (extractors, muffler etc)

    thoughts?

If they do smog testing then you should leave the cat but change out the piping after the cat for a bigger diameter one with a performance muffler of your choise. If not jus gut it out and redo the exhaust from there.

Could you weld on a couple of exhaust flanges in front of and behind the cat? Unbolt the cat and run a straight pipe when you want and then bolt up the cat before going to the the emmissions place to get tested.
Ahem.. I mean. You should never alter stock exhaust as its there to help the truck run cleaner, yada, yada.

well we don't have to get emissions tested every year, BUT if a cop pulls me over and wants to be a d*ck head he will smog test me on the spot, and slap a defect notice on my car...
    im hoping that wont happen!

how hard would it be to put the flanges in, so i can swap out the cat when i need to?
