Wanna swap a v8 into early 70s hilux but dont know which motor would work best n fit easiest. any ideas? ford 302 vs 350 small block vs 355 short block? i dont know, any suggestions wud be great thanks
Both will work fine. There is no physical outter difference between a 350 and a 355 only the bore size.
What kinda 302/ 5.0L do you think I should use? I'd love to use a fuel-injected late 80's-early 90's Mustang 5.0, they're relatively cheap, easy to find, and a big aftermarket for 'em; but that could get complicated with all the engine computers and what not
Im not kidding you. It takes 3 wires to make a 5.0 harness power up. One keyed power, one ground and one to battery power. Give it fuel pressure and it'll run. A mass air, 5 speed, 5 liter v8 in stock trim makes right around 200 to the wheels. 260+ tq. Drop that into any 2400lb truck and it'll roll faster than you'd want to go. If I was you, look for a 96-97 explorer in the junkyards. Buy the whole motor for 150 bucks and rebuild it for 3-400. Then track down the mustang dizzy, harness, computer, sensors (ect...), and a transmission. A decent cam, and itll push out 240 easy.
hmm i see, that actually sounds pretty realistic n low budget. I bet i could get er up to 270 ish with headers, race exh, n cold air intake. would i have to reinforce subframe or anything? sounds like im asking for trouble almost tripling the power of a 40 yr old truck only built for 100hp
The axle, and frame will handle the power fine. Youll need to get creative with your brake setup though. I run 95 LS400 calipers and rotors on my truck. Brings it down from triple digit speeds really quick. Anythings possible.
V8 swap You can use either the Ford SB, Chevy SB V8/6 with no serious issues. The stock frame and suspension will be more than sufficent up to about 600HP. Note that the Ford is approx 1/2" wider, 1" longer and almost an inch taller than the SB Chevy V8/6. The Ford will be about 30 lbs lighter. Both will require some form of header. Bolt in engine adapters are avail for the Chevys 72 up. Ford swap will require some rework of the front xmember or use a rear sump mustang pan. You may need to do a little drop of the center link to clear the oil pan. For the best results you will want to put the engine crankshaft centerline the same as the stock Toyota. This includes the trans output shaft. Both can use an aluminum radiator with minimum of trimming needed of the rad core support. FYI I've done numerous engine swaps including minitrucks. ford 302 engine is shorter in front to back length so less firewall will need to be cut also radiator/fan clearence is good but fords are more expansive to build. a SBC is way cheeper and alot more aftermarket parts are availabe cheep and very much better built than a POS ford product dont put ford anything in your vehicle it will degrade the value just my opinion
