I have a 71 running a 22re with an erg delete, the brakes have a sweet spot, and if you go past that spot the engine just stalls out. It happens in gear and in neutral, at a dead stop and going down the road. Any suggestions on where to start looking?

Take the vacuum hose off of your booster, plug it and see if applying the brakes makes the engine stall...

it's standard 5 speed, shuts off at stop lights if you have the brake in, also going down the road

I don't be able to test anything tell Thursday, I just want to have a few things in mind to try, I'll defiantly try this. Would a leaky booster cause the brakes to be super sensitive as well or would that be the proportioning valve?

Proportioning valve, collapsed rubber brake lines, dirty brake fluid, contaminated brake pads can all cause sensitivity.

Hook a vacuum gage to a manifold source. You should be getting about 15" at idle. If you get a really low reading or the needle floats alot you have a vacuum leak. Read the gage when you hit the brakes. It sounds like the problem is somewhere in the brake booster.

So the vacuum likes check out, but there is a hissing noise coming from the booster, should I go ahead and replace the booster?

so you plugged the nipple on the manifold that connected to the booster and tried the brakes while running? did it still do it?

I didn't do this, i will though by nipple are you referring to where the hose connects to the mani or at the check valve?

where the hose connects to the mani. If it runs fine while braking with this plugged, booster is bad or leaking

Manifold, check valve, wherever. Just isolate the booster.

Note: You won't have power brakes for the test. Be ready for that...

Hey guys I'm back again, I've been driving the hilux like this a while now and thought i would give it another go. I removed the brake booster hose and capped off the mani. It stalled out every time I hit the brake, so it's not the brake booster? What should I check next?

Update*** has to be a Damn vacuum leak

That is weird, you could try disconnecting the brake light switch, it may have some dodge wiring. Failing that you may have to preform an exorcism.

Well I think the problem is solved, I replaced all the vacuum caps, vaccum hoses, and clamps, adjusted the idle a little bit and she runs like brand new! I still have some playing to do with the idle now she's a bit high but I'm happy the brake issue is over :drunk:
