occasionally when i step on the gas in gears 1-3, my engine cuts out/ sputters before catching and accelerating forward..what could this be?

To resurrect an old thread--I have the same problem (though with a '92 22re).

Mine started when my exhaust rusted and got a leak. Was just hoping it was the leak. Any ideas?

To elaborate. When this happens to me it feels like the engine is hitting a wall, I'll be driving and the truck will stop accelerating. If I apply more gas the engine will get a bit louder but the revs won't really go up, and my truck will start to slow down. Sometimes when I let off the accelerator enough it will kick back in and return to normal.

My hope is it's just the exhaust leak. It may be the timing chain...

The exhaust leak, depending on where it is, could contribute since it could be messing with o2 sensor readings. Does it stumble when cold, hot, or both? The timing chain wouldn't be a cause of stumbling, at least not one I've ever dealt with. Stumbling is usually a fuel mixture issue.

Sounds like my 94. Here is what I have done and nothing changed. IACV new, lashed valves, checked timing, cleaned injectors, new cap/rotor/wires/plugs/PCV. I have a hollow cat and a 02 with 207K miles so I got new cat and a slightly used 02 im installing this weekend I'll let you know if that helps since a few have already mentioned the exhaust thing. If this doesnt help next thing Im doing is making sure its holding fuel pressure consitently in the lines to the injectors (pump might be shorting or something, im guessing orig pump so again over 200k miles on it)

ground wires and something else. mine was the ground wire for a while because the thing was cut and it kept tapping the block under load, so it just cut out and stuff

Since my O2 sensor is just as rusted as my pipes, it's likely a problem with my O2 -- either with the sensor itself or air from the leak throwing off its readings or both?

I'm planning on fixing my rusted exhaust by having a full custom job, 2.25'' pipe with freeflow cat and Flowmaster Hushpower muffler. Guess I'll add a new O2 sensor on to that...

I have not seen a problem like this on my toyota but on other cars i have seen the fuel filter, fuel pump, or mass air flow sensor was hella dirty. I would check those while you are at it.

mine was cutting out when I was on the gas at speed "60mph" or so ...it turned out to be the fuel filter...good luck...

just thought of something else, may or may not help, but i 'member when my fuel pumps diaphram was going, it was running crappy. if that is the prob, theres a lil hole on the bottom side of the pump that gas will leak out of if the diaphram is bad, u should smell the gas just a suggestion worth checking though
