Hello, I struggled with my 1980 SR5 dying on deceleration and finally nailed it down to a fuel cut-off solenoid. I wired it directly to the battery and the problem went away. Now it is time for a new smog test and I put all the smog stuff back. The truck is running great but I am wondering if I should connect the solenoid back into the harness for a smog test (though I did not save the original green connector)... The solenoid supposed to prevent getting rich on deceleration and I guess it should not affect emission as tested during smog test.. However the extra wiring can set off a red flag on visual during inspection. Is there any unconspicuous place under the hood to hook up solenoid so it would only get the power when ignition is on? Electrical wiring looks like a mess on my truck and I really like to get it sorted out.. how are those fusible links should look like? I think they were replaced or bypassed by PO.. Has anyone did a complete rewiring in the engine bay? Any advice would be appreciated ! Serge
The solenoid operation does effect emissions. Go to Pep Boys, Auto Zone or other parts houses and get a weather pack connector with the number of poles (wires) you need. Install the connector so the inspector sees it is installed and just leave the hook up the way you have it now (wired to the battery). If you fail then you will have to hook it up like the original factory system and get it working properly. As far as your truck wiring, I would try to find a good used Toyota harness first, have a factory service manual for your truck and really study how your truck is wired and what all of the electrical components do. (Trekker Paul on the YotaTech WEB site might have a good harness and he is a good person to deal with). I have wired many cars and trucks over the years for myself and my friends and the only after market wiring kit I would use is the Ron Francis Wire Works kit. It is the best and Tech support is outstanding. Believe me, I have seen a lot of wiring kits over the years and I have had to fix so many I lost count. All of my auxiliary wiring on my truck is Ron Francis Wire Works systems and I have not had any problems with the components or wires in over 25 years. Good luck to you.
You can look in my photo album. There's a picture of my battery and you can see the fusible links set up. Rick
Rick, Thanks for the answer. I could not see well where the fuse links on the photo in your album, but here is what I have - box with glass fuses... Serge
Thanks ! I actually connected solenoid back to the harness and it runs pretty well now.. go figure.. I guess some other connection was at fault and I fixed it unknowingly while putting smog stuff back on. It passed smog with large margin (of course, as tech said it would fail miserably if the requirements where the same as for the newer cars . I looked up Ron Francis website and it seems quality stuff indeed but pricey ..
