What would I need to do to swap from my stock EFI set up on my 22re in my 93, to a carb set up from an older truck. I will probably do a Weber instead of a Stock carb. Reasoning for this is because I need to rebuild my engine, and while it's out, I'm going to shave the firewall and everything not absolutely needed to drive the truck. I want the engine bay as empty as possible. Thanks in advance guys.
honestly, ive seen efi motors super clean with all the extra junk taken off and a well done wire tuck. looks clean. if you still wanna go carb, you will need to strip everything off the top end of the motor. get yourself a good 22r intake, maybe an offy intake, carb, remove the fuel pump from the tank and run a mechanical, or you can swap out the tank electric pump for a lower pressure pump, or regulate the pump way down..... should be all you really need to do. i de-smogged and rid myself of similar thing that were not "needed" to make the motor run on mine and its fairly simple to run that motor.
I understand they can be cleaned up with efi, but this truck won't get driven much, and its going to be body dropped, and taking that high efi intake off will severley help with hood clearance as that's the highest part of the engine.
So basically, I need a fuel pressure regulator, carbon intake and weber... Sounds simple enough! Awesome! Then I can all the smog and efi crap! Sweet!
Other than the hood clearance problem ,which can be addressed. There is no good reason to go from a EFI engine to a carbed! The die hard hot rodder's know this ! Fuel injection ,electronically controlled will keep your engine @ the most hp/torque rate to the need period! Mileage, performance will & is @ it's best! Over carbing a engine in the hot rod world is the most abused thing!! A combustion engine is no more than a pump,& can move no more fuel /air than in it's design. Unless force feed!! Keep what you have & make more power from it!!
No thanks. I'm by far not a hot rodder! I know minitrucks and hotrods go hand in hand for most people, but not this guy! I like the look and ease of working on a carbed engine. Thanks for the input though.
actually, ive seen guys (twisted minis i think it was) modify a efi intake to clear a body dropped truck. the upper intake plunnum is either cut down and refitted to be as low if not lower than the valve cover, or a new low clearance manifold is made. like mentioned, theres really no practical reason you would need to go into a carb.
ditch all that efi garbage there is to much crap to fail and run like sh*t. you should run dual side draft carbs for best under hood clearance for body drop. and gain performance with a cam and header
^ What he said. Switching from EFI to Carb is stupid. EFI is better in EVERY way.Theres a reason nothing is carburated anymore.Only the old dinosaurs try to keep obsolete technology in the loop... Whether it upsets people or not, its true.
I'm not going to try and argue that carbs are better than modern fuel injection, but 20 year old Toyota efi systems really aren't better than a well tuned set of side drafts. I certainly wouldn't convert a brand new 2012 Tacoma to carbs, but on a 20 year old truck with a 22R I'll take a set of carbs any day. Stock vs stock a 22RE might be better than a 22R, but once you start modifying it it's a different story. Our trucks are dinosaurs as well, along with their obsolete efi systems that include a lot of hard to find and expensive electronics that will fail. (Whether it upsets people or not, it's true.) Carbs keep it simple and avoid the headaches and frustration. FWIW my truck was carbed from the factory, not converted.
I love my carbs! Take a listen... Headphones preffered! From Stratos to Escort part 1 - RWD rally action with pure engine sounds (Lombard RAC Rally 1977) - YouTube
Yeah I actualy am doing the oppisite to the 22r in my 94 and going from a webber to a lce fuel injection set up cause i'm turboing it,here in australia we never got the later style 22r's with fuel injection, the next modle hiluxes came out with 3rz-fe's
