drop control arms and upper ball joints

    is it necessary to flip the upper ball joints when installing lower drop arms? i have read a few threads where guys say you have to flip uppers when you flip lower, but i flipped my lowers over a year ago and havent had an issue, yet. alignment is still good, no wear on tires, nothing. dont see the point of doing the uppers. give me your opinions, please. it will be a few months before i get time to install the drop arms. i just helped my neighbor make drop arms for his old chevy c10. was pretty easy and dont know why i couldnt do it to a yota. i have seen aftermarket drop arms and i know it can be done for a fraction of the cost. most likely free.

    I used to do the flip on both uppers and lowers but after taking notice of how little angle changed when they were done, I stopped flipping the uppers. Its just not necessary. Ive done drop arms, spindles, aaand flipped balljoint and never done them so, you should be fine.

    As for building lca's, they really are not hard to build... If you have seen the djm arms they are pretty damn straight forward design.

    thanks, SD. guess i will hit the jy and get my donor lca's. do you know if anyone has attempted this before? if there isnt a write up already, i will take lotsa pics during the build.

    you don't have to flip the upper.

    they sell aftermarket arms, but if you can do the c10 ones you can do the toyota arms. i've seen it done on here a long time ago. can't remember who did it.

    Technically you should. Otherwise the upper arm articulates which could affect the alignment. In the real world though, the change is so small it shouldn't matter. I didn't bother flipping the uppers when I did the lowers.

    instead of making a new thread, and since this one answered most of my questions concerning flipping the ball joints... before i go ahead and do work, how much of a drop should i expect? i'm kinda OCD with my ride height, and have to make sure i lower the rear the same amount. im guessing 1 inch?

    Roughly. You'll have to measure when you do it. When I did it it actually cancelled out the lift from the gas charged shocks I put on. (monroe reflex monotubes for a chevy 1500. valved firm enough for a 4k+ lb truck but good quality so it rides like butter. also slightly shorter and the best part: $35 ea from rockauto)
