I want to do a front disc swap on my 74 Hilux. What all parts will I need? I want to do a straight forward easy swap.
take the spindles, brakes, brake lines, and master cyclinder of an 80 and up yota and mount them on your truck, only the left on the right and the right on the left.. and obviously replace the master... bleed and viola...disc brakes.
from 70 drums to an 81 disc set up when i 1st got my 70 hilux it was only stopping with the passenger front drum (terrifying) the truck wood damn near cut a 180 everytime i stopped.. and constantly had to pump the brakes b4 i even thought about attempting to stop.. it being a 1970 i felt i needed to address that problem b4 i slammed into some 1. so i took my ass to the local junk yard found me an 81 toyo disel beat the **** outta the balljoints and tierod end cut the brake line and took the whole spindel and disc brake assembly. with my truck secure on stands i got the air out and got to work. NOTE: you will need a can of pb blaster and a 10 or 11 LINE WRENCH.. let the pb blaster soak in over night especially on the brake lines. and when pullin off the old drums i found the passenger side had no cotter pin and the driver side had a nail as a cotter pin. after i rounded out the brake line i eventually got it off with vice grips and yes the 81 rubber hose on the caliper screwed rite in to the brake line attached to the frame (sweet) and i first installed it with the calliper twards the front bumper. and after a few beers i decided to swap sides and move the caliper twards the door. on the back side of the wheel.. now the dog bone link on the back side of the unit (the link that goes on the back of the spindle held by 2 bolts that attaches to the tie rod) there is a difference from 81 to 70 same basic designe but the 81 was bent in ALOT more that wood drastically throw my allighnment off.. and the bolt holes are a little diff so i bolted the 70 links on the 81 spindel USE THREAD LOCK!!!!! and the upper balljoint and tie rod went back in easily. bottom ball joint was a diff story.. i had to use 2 FAT lock washers to take up room where there was no threads.. again i used locktight and cottter pinned everydamnthing.. i repacked the 81 berrings with grease. warshed my hands and felt the magic of stopping with the whole front end.. damn good feeling.. the calipers kinda stick cuz i did get them from a junk yard but when the brakes ware out ima get new rotors calipers and shoes.. then i'll be set.
or you could use 76-78 disc brake spindle and calipers . they should bolt right up. I did this swap to my 72
I got 76 kit and am currently in the process of bolting it up to my late 72.. got the whole passenger side on and put on the original 72 wheel.. and it catches on the caliper. Anyone else have this problem? I already ground down the edges that were catching and its still happening.. i could bring them down more but should I just go for later model wheels instead?
