    hey all

is it possible to mix pinions and crowns from 2 different 8 inch diffs?
i ask because the motor seems to be working a little too hard on the highway with the 4.1:1 ratio currently in it.
but i can get a hiace diff with 4.875 ratio. while this is worse for highways the ratio is achived but different pinions and crowns.
the 4.1 in the lux is created by using a 10 tooth pinion and a 41 tooth crown.
the 4.875 in the hiace is created by using a 8 tooth pinion and a 39 tooth crown.

so if i were to use the 10 tooth pinion in the lux with the 39 tooth crown i would get a 3.9:1 ratio. is it possible to do this without anything failing on me(assuming all the preloads etc were set up properly in the diff) and how much effect would it have going from a 4.1 to a 3.9?

    thanks

door slamer, Sorry but the helix (curve) of the gears is going to be different. By the number of teeth , it is going to have a a different helix. Also if you are going to use used gears the pinion and ring gear are worn together. If you say that with 4:10 the hyway speed sucks you don't want to go 4:86. The taller gear will make it worse. I used to run 3:07 or3:23 with a 5 speed and I couldn't really use 5th til 65-70mph hope this helps SSb
