Hey guys...... Trying to figure out if my engine has been rebuilt or the original motor with almost 300,000 miles. It's very clean and doesn't burn oil at all. The block is black..... Did they come from the factory black? Is there any other ways I can check to see if it's a rebuild? Thanks!!
Well some engine builders /machine shops leave a marking on the block . Engine blocks were black from the factory there maybe some that didn't get the surface rust coating you stated that its very clean and doesn't burn oil those are signs of a rebuild or a very well kept truck . There are internal signs of a rebuild but it's not worth trying to find . When the motor is in good condition there are also casting numbers and casting marks on the heads . But then again if runs good leave it there's nuttin wrong with a rebuilt engine
Right on...... Just would be very curious to see if I did have a rebuilt engine...... Would Make feel a little better with it showing such high mileage!
Look for things like Permatex or an after market head gasket.I'm pretty sure somethings have been done to it like water pump, thermostat, maybe timing chain. But consider it a good find.People will often have the engine detailed before they sell so just keep your eye on it.It could have been detailed to hide leaks.
Yea 300k that's about 12 times around the world . Most city driven vehicles would burn a little oil or have leaking valve seals if they were original motors rare you see a motor hit past 200k and not consume a little oil specially vehicles built before 1995 mainly American cars . A compression test will give you some insight on how healthy the motor is ... Malesso is right tho permatex is usually a sign a motor has been worked on . Oil pan area water pump front cover . Scratches fine scratches on an engine oil pan sometimes indicate motors been on the ground that and worn or scared bolt heads ....
Rebuild in a can mine is factory never smelled nothing but now that i own it has tiny bit of smell heheheh
