finally tackled the dash. what do you guys think? i will post pics later when it warms up a bit. too cold to go install it now. i was gonna do the rest of dash, but ran out of adhesive, and wanna see what just this looks like wrapped. might fiberglass rest and paint black. dunno!
Looks real nice. Only question I have is are you gonna cut out for the defroster vents? I did not on my truck and the air did not get through the tweed very well.
thanks guys. and da roach, i just realized i posted the wrong pic. i do have defrost slots cut. too cold around here now to keep them covered. i think its funny that the local upholstery shop said that he couldnt do my dash cuz of the curves in it. cant wait to go show him. i have never done this before, and i just stretched it a bit and fit perfectly. the ends were the worst part.
Can you post more pics of the sides and backside? It looks really good, now you've got me wondering.....
sorry guys, didnt read these till after i installed it. i still dont have the lower pieces in so i got the best angles i could. this is of the dash seperated. there is a groove almost centered in top. i cut the tweed bout 1/4" past the groove. the other part of dash slides into this groove so i just used flathead screwdriver and tucked as i went. the very front part that meets the windshield i cut flush with edge. these are side edges and where the glove box should be, looking up the trick to wrapping tweed around underneath edges is to make relief cuts. looks kinda like this \_____/\__/\/\__/\____/ the more extreme the curve, the closer the cuts. i found more adhesive today so will be wrapping the lower dash pieces in next couple days. i will get more detailed pics then. i never think of getting pics in the middle of things.
well, i forgot to take pics of the process again, very sorry. i was in a hurry to get it done before work tonight. but here is the finished dash all installed. got the door panels to make, shift boot, and the steering column surround piece.
N I C E !!! Lookin' good ... My son and i were just talkin' about doin' that to mine ... Good job ...
looks good man. tweed is really easy to work with. i did my old ranger in it. didn't know what i was doing either and friends thought it was professional. i've got some ultra-suede and ultra-leather that im going to be using for my yota. it's fake suede and leather that they use in private aircrafts. i got it when i was working for dassualt falcon jet in little rock, ar.
Wow! I am impressed. I was thinking about wrapping my dash in fabric like that but I didnt think I could do a good enough job to get it to look like that.
Thanks guys. The only reason i redid my interior was because i installed the sunroof. So including cost of sunroof, i have bout $80 into it. Thats the sunroof, over 4 yards of tweed, yard of batting, and 4 cans of paint for carpet. Just looking for 3 more yards so i can cover back wall and the centers of seats. And diontde, i say go for it. I have never done it before and thought it was a bit easy. I did have a few mishaps, which i learned from. Got some hog rings and pliers from my boss so i can tackle the seats. Excited bout that. Let ya guys know how that goes.
Wow! Looking at that takes me back 13 years. My 93' Toyota was Viper GTS blue and had a gray tweeded dash with that blue on the accents. That tweed mades it look so clean.
