the area is block'd off though. the fluid wouldn't be able to run down smoothly into a catch pan..... it would just pour out onto everything

That plug will get about half of the coolant. If you really wanted to FLUSH the system, and get every bit of scale and coolant out...

-Go ahead and buy a new t stat and gasket with your new coolant.
-Drain your coolant and recyle it.
    -Take your T-stat housing off.
-Remove the rad hoses at one end. Upper and lower.
-Unhook your heater core hoses at 1 end. both of them.

-Take a garden hose and blast in every connention you undid. Both into the motor and into the rubber hoses. Using your hand as a "gasket" so all the water goes thru the system.
-Blast thru the heater core. Youll have to turn the temp controls to hot inside the cab.

-Just flush lots of water thru everything till it comes out nice and clean. I usually spend about 5-10 min flushing and backflushing each connection.
-Drain as much water out of the system as you can. Theres a drain on the engine, drivers side, behind and under the exhaust manifold.
-Tighten everything back up and add your coolant(mixed with DISTILLED water).

    Done! :waytogo:

they sell this thing at advance, you cut your heater hose and put this "T" in, and it attaches your garden hose so you can just run your motor with the drain plug pulled out and the hose on... I have it on my 92
