i went 4 wheelin today at the casa grande mountains and i ran into this! this is a cold war era (1966) Corona spy satellite calibration target! stuck out in the middle of no where. i checked on google earth, and there are a few in the area, but nobody has pics of this one up. from far... and some other random pics i took while out... Interstate 10, at the I-8 interchange, from my toyota's point of view
looks like some kinda nuclear sign! better make sure your not growing a tail! haha looks dry there, its been raining all day here in P-town and a little yesterday
i cut it out about a month and a half ago (i think.. lol) for sure!! from what i've read they would place a large spotlight in the manhole and the satelite would pic up on it. it started sprinkling right when i was leaving the target, and was off an on while i was wheelin around. once i got home it actually started raining. i was probably 2.5 miles from my house. but at the time it was built, my neighborhood didn't exist. there are a couple right next to houses since the surrounding cities have grown a lot. (from what i've found on google earth..)
Sweet! Sorry to thread jack, but your pictures are making me miss mine before last week. My truck crapped out on me, and I tried driving it tow work last night, so much oil everywhere, and smoke. You're lucky yours is wheelin' worthy Bernie, i'm envying you here.
