Ive noticed that side draft manfolds block off that center coolant passage, can i make a plate and block it off to and eliminate the coolent hose going the intake?

yep. my heater is fed by the line from the pass side of the front cover, and the radiator on the driver side. i blocked the center port.

Snap! I logged on to ask the same question haha. Hey SB could you show me a picture of what you did as well? I could really use a hand with how to block off that center feed.

Hey guys! You got two options when wanting to delete the coolant passage between ports 2 and 3. Make a block off plate, or buy one from LC Engineering. If your looking to delete any other coolant passages, look at LCE site and they have all the block plates and info you need.

I actually purchased my manifold and linkage from LCE. The problem I forsee having is that there's a brace for the 2 seperate sides that runs flush across the head so there isn't really a spot for a plate I can bolt into place so it looks as though I will need to find an aluminum welder, or maybe cut an aluminum plate to size and JB weld it into place?

blocking off the center intake coolant port will yeild higher temps. that port helps alot with cooling the head down. my side draft overheated like crazy until i figured it out. the way i got around it was to drill and tap a hole for a heater hose port on the EGR plate on the back of the head. heater works and it hides the port and hose behind the head.

Hmmmm... what if I were to remove the center bit of the cannon manifold to alow clearance? Do you think it would compromise the integrity of the whole? I don't think it would seeing as its so far back against the head.

mine seems to run cool temps except when the thermostate first kicks open. it hits just under the high mark then drops down. so i wanna put a 180* in place of my 195* in. but i might also make a hose that y's the one off the cover plate with the one off the head to feed the heater. so both allow cooling. ill cross that bridge when i make a stock intake into a single sidedraft intake.

I never noticed any difference before and after my sidedraft manifold and blocking off all the extra coolant and heater ports. It runs cooler if anything, although it's probably from the egr delete at the same time.

i have been searching like crazy :verdict_in: to find out what the coolant passage between the 2 and 3 ports is for? it has the vacuum piece on top and i don't know where it needs to be hooked up. or if it needs to be. i can't find out how the water flows through the head to see if it can be blocked off without causing a significant rise in temps. it is the one directly behind the arrow in the original post's picture. it's on a 1980 20r but the tubes for the heater core run from the timing cover all the way to the back of the block before connecting to the rubber hose where as the 22r and the 20r shown above stop about in the middle on intake side. so i think the heater system is slightly different(from a corona) but that middle piece between the two sides of the intake manifold is the same, and also there on 22r/re. any guru's know what it is/does/is it needed? thanks, Ben

Its a temperature actuated vaccum valve.

Mine hit my carb, so I just hacksawd it in half and left it in there.

+1 on keeping the coolant bypass. Blocking it off seems like a no-no.

There is a coolant port on the intake manifold on a 20R. I have the coolant hose from ^^ bypass thing going right to it. Looped style.

Hmm..i see, on my 4x4 22r with weber i blocked off the vacuum ports on top, and it ties in to the heater tube below, i think.

but as i have this 20r out and want to clean up and oversimplify everything i didn't know where it went or what it did( with my heater core tube going all the way back). so it goes into the intake manifold.good info, thanks. since all that stuff was unhooked when i picked up the motor

i wish someone had a cut away of the head to see the water passages. i have to fix one of the bolts broke off on removal anyways, as well as on on the intake manifold. :duh: what fun. i guess i can just try to freshen up that piece rather than a block off.. if i use the stock carb(20 or 22r), will i need that temperature vacuum valve for it to help run better?

    thanks, Ben
