Does anybody have any tips or tricks on how I should do this? My truck has minor surface rust around the edges. I would like to take care of this now than later. Thanks in advance.
best thing to do is break it off, remove the windshield and install a plan rubber, looks a lot better then the stock molding and if you dont wanna do it that way then get a clip remover and start at the top corner then it should all come off pretty easy!
You will need to get a clip tool.... And most likely a clip set...there old and your going to break some. Some of the clips will be embedded in urethane and you might have to cut away some of it to get the new clips on. The ones stuck in the urethane are "deletable" tho...lol Its a job man.I'm an autoglass guy of 18 years, trust me. If you need a clip set, pm me your year and model and ill send you a pack cheap.
Sounds like this is going to be harder than I thought. Knowing me I'll probably break something. It would be easier to clean the rust with the trim off.
dont take it off, they are usually brittal flimsy and will break. they arent meant to be taken on and off. just use a fine steel wool
if they do make a plain rubber one I am really interested as i need to install the windshield this week....PLEASE ADVISE
Hey great info, alote of people have questions on this, if ya have the links or proof, send it our way and share the love. . .
Getting ti off is actually the easy part, getting it back on is tricky. Just had the top piece and a corner fly off over the weekend. Went back to try to find it and had no luck. Too bad to, it was just painted black and was in perfect condition. Now I only run the bottom piece to hold the cowl down.
Ok... In 1984, they started gluing the windshield in the Toyota pickup. There is NO gasket from 1984 up. The truck is not designed to have a gasket installed on it, if you clean out all the urethane, clean up the pinch-weld, and try to install a gasket, it will not work correctly Its not the correct shape, and its not safe even if you manage to rig one in there. I have been doing autoglass for over 18 years now.So i think i know my stuff. If you guys have ANY questions regarding autoglass, supplies, or materials to use, feel free to ask me in a thread, or pm me. The next one i get to do, ill do a write up, and show how and what to use. Might be a while tho, don't see many any more Ill try and do as many of these as i can for you guys, as in all the different years when they change something.
