Hello all, I'm having what I 'think' is a carburetor problem and would like to get some professional opinions so I can try to remedy the problem myself rather than spending a fortune at the local carb shop. First off, when I am driving, I can smell gasoline fumes. I can smell it whether I am idling or on the freeway. I know it's not an exhaust leak because I just had my muffler guy install a new catalytic converter and he inspected the entire exhaust system for leaks and there were NONE. Second, I am only getting about 16 MPG on the freeway. I know this truck is rated at 21 city and 29 highway I believe. Third, the engine diesels often whenever I shut it off. Then it lets out a sound like air pressure being released and then my whole garage smells like gas. Fourth, it stalls in the morning until it's warmed up. Other than this, it runs great, but I know it's not right. I don't want to take the time and hassle to rebuild the carb and was thinking of buying a rebuilt carb and swapping the core. Does anyone have any experience with this? Please share and help...
try this http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1609 while your at it, look for gas leaks, or signs of leakage around the carb, fuel line, and charcoal canister. most likely cause stuck floats, causing the carb to flood. with luck my lil "tune up will free the floats. but if all else fails install a weber
dude ya need a tune up, firstly change your fuel filter definately do what shonuff mentioned, then re-time it and if youve got the means adjust your valve clearances its easy all you need is feeler gauges, sockets and some spanners if your keen let me know and il put a post up on how to do it
like the other guy said look in the sight glass at float level not more than 3/4 to top of glass, you also have an aap diaphram on the side of carb it comes in a carb kit when it goes bad when it will have a dead miss on #1 cyl and make it sometimes die when cold
even if all else DOESNT fail, install a weber 32/36. Gas mileage AND power. you can get those things bolt-on-kit now for 250 bucks on ebay. thats 100 less what i paid for mine a year and half ago.
whats the point of posting info you dont know or are unsure of? a properly tuned weber WILL give you better MPG's and PERFORMANCE. Fact. ps: this post is from march, and the original poster is long gone...
put a weber 32/36 on my shot old 22r. brought gas mileage from 20-21 to steady 24-25 and with my current motor (clocking over 343k miles) i'm capable of 26ish if i keep it at 55mph with a 4 speed and WEBER 38!
