Reinstalled the carburetor for my 20r '77, after taking it almost entirely apart, cleaning it, and replacing many of the worn out parts (gaskets, diaphragms, etc..) The carb is getting fuel and the truck will start, but then we run into a problem. The accelerator plunger (that squirts more fuel in to actually... you know... go.) isn't doing what it should. The original check ball remains in that one, only because the retaining spring holding it in couldn't be removed. The plunger also wasn't soaked in light oil like it should have been before installation. could it be that the gas is just slipping past the unswollen plunger? The carburetor worked (i'm using that term quite loosely here) before the rebuild, except that it was all gunked up and several vacuum lines were plugged, which eventually led to not being able to start the truck. the lines have all been unplugged, and the majority are replaced with new hose. if i cannot fix it, then i'll have to drop the $ for a weber (and not one of those cheap spanish ones. The real deal[yes, you can still buy them new]) a lot sooner than i wanted to.
a little more info please what are the symptoms just rebuilt mine night before last[ more a clean out really] does it stumble on accel, decel backfire run only when pumping gas pedal what are your adjustments set at ? all this whould help me deduce what is occuring
Its at the point where the truck only runs for about 10 seconds, then dies again and we have to wait a bit for the fuel pump to get more gas in. moving the gas pedal, which should be when gas is getting squirted in, moves the plunger, but does not squirt the gas. The adjustments are exactly (AFAIK) the same as they were before the rebuild.
not unless the new gasket (or something else) is in the way. the float spring mechanism got replaced and was working fine prior to installation. i do know that (for whatever reason) one of the springs for a secondary piston (can't remember the name) was, for whatever reason, incredibly tight (as if it had suddenly gotten longer or something obstructed it) on reinstall, even though we checked and triple-checked that it was the correct one.
if was your aap spring make sure it is installed between the cap and diaphram and your little orrifice in the end of the brass tube is unrestricted, if yours has a retrun fuel line blow it out back to the tank and also check your gas cap vent [take off cap see if gas flow normally ] had a tercel i worked on that was sucking a vaccum on the tank after the owner installed wrong gas cap i.e. fuel injected evap system cap on a carb system
just off topic my aunt lives in Auburn its beautiful where you live at man but its been raining so much here i dont know how you guys deal with it all the time
