I just bought a long bed '76 because I couldn't find a '70-72. I just love that early body style, but they seem impossible to find and the '76 was in my back yard. I did some searching here and can't seem to find answers to some questions. I am hoping some of you can help! It needs bushings and steering components replaced. Where are you guys getting polyurethane kits from? Energy Suspension doesn't list applications before '84, is there another source or another application that fits? My 20R has no power and backfires on closed throttle deceleration, I figured a carb rebuild and tuneup should help, but I am totally a newb with this motor and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction if there is more to it. This truck had a bench, but I want buckets. I can't seem to find an inner set of threaded holes next to the tranny tunnel for the sliders. What do you guys do? Thanks in advance!
Pics, hmm, OK, it isn't anything too special. This truck has been a Colorado truck it's whole life. Bought in Aurora CO and now on the west side of the state. It is pretty stock, the paint on the cab has all weathered off, but the bed is a lot less sundamaged. Only a few minor scrapes. I bought it to have a driver while my '86 extra cab long bed is getting panel mods. I need a long bed to haul my motorcycle and this one came at the right time and price. What I would like to do is extend the driveline and make it a ten foot flat bed. If I can accomplish that I will keep it, otherwise it will probably go for sale when I am rolling the '86 again. I have a complete drivetrain from a '97 Tacoma I am thinking would go in this truck nicely. Anyone here done that swap in a '76? Info and pics would be cool. Thanks for the welcome, I have already learned a TON by looking around here, and am looking forward to learning a whole lot more.
Steering components are out there, just gotta do some searching as they are getting harder and harder to find. I replaced the shock, rear springs, sway bar, and end links with urethane on my 77, no kits available but I used energy suspension components and went by dimension size to get what I needed. The backfire problem could be carb, vacuum, or just bad need of tuneup, kinda hard to give a definate on that one. The holes for OEM buckets are there, just covered with small round tape covers on the inner rears, but no threaded nut attatched to the underside if it was originally bench seat, so bolt and nut is best option for those, the rest are there and ready to go in my experience but thats using the later style tracks that attatch to the cross brace in front, some of the earlier tracks sat flat on the floor front and rear, those I can't say for sure if the inner track holes are there or not, but would be very simple to drill if not.
Thanks for the welcomes! Well, it runs, and I guess I should count that for something. It is floored at 55 though and slows down for even the slightest incline. Took a look down the carb throat and boy is it black. Rebuild is definitely in the works! Haven't done much with carbs since high school, so we will see how that goes! There are holes in the sheet metal from the factory, but none of them have threads, so I guess I will have to rig it up myself. Has anyone tried Prelude seats in theirs? So, no control arm bushings? Shucks, I was hoping. Just found out this thing is still running points. Wow. Can anyone tell me the reason that the body style/generation I have is split up into two forums? And why the '76-'78 is lumped in with the torsion spring crowd? I keep looking at threads only to realize they aren't for coil spring suspensions.....
The topic bout the early generation trucks being bunched up into 2 instead of 4 i has no idea why but it is wat it is
Nook, Thanks, you came through again. That will be better than nothing... the current bushings are soooo dried out that the control arms clunk every time I hit the brakes and it sounds like metal on metal when the suspension compresses. I have jacked it up and nothing else is that kind of sloppy so I am pretty sure it is the bushings. I was REALLY wanting to stay away from rubber, but if that is all that is out there... Never heard of partstrain. Have you used them? They didn't show up when I searched Google. And it will be close to $90 (plus shipping) for all 8 bushings! Poked around some more and it will run another hundred for ball joints. And another hundred for tie rods. All of a sudden this $600 truck is looking like a money pit! Throw in a $100 for a tune up and carb rebuild and I have to start wondering if it is worth it. Yeah, of course it is. It's a TOYOTA, it's almost as old as me, and it still starts every time the key is turned! Thanks for the help guys!!
Honestly bro investing a G into something u got for 600 isnt bad. Thats a kind of deal id be willing to take
I ain't complaining! My last vehicle had a $300/mo payment, this truck will pay for itself in no time flat. And it is a "business" truck, so I can write off repairs, mileage, insurance, and advertising I put on it. All in all not a bad way to go. I just love Toyotas! I gotta get some air in the back tire and shoot a couple of pics. It isn't too special, but it is mine!
