So I got a chance to start checking this truck out. I bought it knowing it had some rust, but the only spot I was concerned with was the drivers front cab corner. I got the dash apart to put in my stereo and fix a couple other little issues on the dash. Here's what it looks like from the inside. Driving it, you can hear air rushing in, and inspecting it, you can see light spilling out in a couple places. The rust extends in maybe an inch into the floor board, but doesn't go much higher than the fuse block. Now like I said, I am a total newb as far as body work goes. I don't have a clue where to start. A friend of mine was suggesting we section the cab in that corner. What do you guys think?
I have rust on mine in the same spot and have been looking for replacement panels but haven't found a place that has them yet. The problem, as I see it is that the space behind fender collects dirt and road grime and it sits there, holding moisture and causes rust from the inside of the fender/cab. The damage looks like its repairable from the pictures if you can find either replacement panels or a decent truck in a junk yard you can cut that area from. Let me know if you find replacement panels.
You should cut out any thing like this away & weld in new metal than use a good grade body filler( like Ever Coat)! There are projects that kill the rust & turn it to a primer like coating, than body fill & paint. Also another good product is Por-15 ,doses the same as above but comes as a paint. If you use this ware gloves & long sleeve shirt,as only comes off while fresh!! If you spray this product ,use a very good mask, it will kill your lungs!!!!!!!
Ya ray I was plannin on checking the junk yards this weekend if I can get away with it lol. Got a 3 week old at home now so time with the truck is kinda limited lol. Like I said I know enough about body work to shake a can of rustoleum so this should get interesting. I was plannin on a brand new fender. Rockauto has them for about $30 plus shipping so I thought that was pretty justifiable. I'll try to keep this updated if I can.
