id say if you can weld and are confident in it, go for it. just measure alot, make straight cuts and go slow with the welder. ive seen it done on various lowered trucks and looks good if done right. your gas tank is in front of the axle, and there isnt much back there. good luck. take pictures for us if you do it.
I say do it...Ive been seeing more people do it lately & I like how it looks. Its real popular in Australia!!
after i chopped the top on my 86 i bobbed the 2x4 shortbed 10". i thought it would look o.k. but i think somewhere around 6" would have been better. don't matter now that i got the 4x4 bed... it's actually a pretty easy mod. just make sure when you cut it you don't cut it where the inner taillight housing attaches to the bedside. i cut mine right on the edge and it made it a pain to weld. i would recommend staying close to it though so that it doesn't warp too bad.
I bobbed the bed on my '79 wheeler and I love it! It is probably my favorite mod on that truck. Not just wheeling either. It's cool just trying to get out of a crowded parking lot! My bed is bobbed 23.5", but then that's a wheeling rig... I am sure that's not the aesthetic you are going for. Bernie's probably right about 6-8" being good. I look forward to seeing how it turns out!
i actually really wanna bob my longbed. the proportions of a toyota longbed are strange. the front and rear sections are about even compared to the wheel well location. unlike a fullsize domestic which has a much shorter rear section. i want it to be able to still fit a bike in the back not crooked. and my air matress for camping/drive-in/pissed off gf. haha... i may have some pictures of your style in a bobbed lowered format if your interested.
my honda xr200r just barely fits straight in my 79 longbed, and it isn't bobbed. to shut the tailgate i have to compress the front shocks just a tad.
well, i dont mind the gate being open. my 92 short i barely fit a ducati in the back sideways as hell. depends on the bike i guess. more so, i would just want the lines more even. but im not painting that truck unless i wreck it. i already did once, and just waited til i came across a good fender the exact same color. cant even tell now. i still need an orange 78 grille. haha.
How many inches do you think I should cut off? What will look good is what I am going for not worried about hauling anything.
not really a fan of bobbed beds on slammers...... they look funky.... but then again i think they look funky cus people tend to cut off too much. the back end of the bed behind the rear tire shouldnt be shorter than the nose of the truck from the front of the front tire cus then it makes it look nose-long....
i like that pink color.. the bobbed bed not a huge fan of.. theres a few yotas rolling around my town with them ill look around tomorow and take a photo...
see that right there doesnt look bad at all.. it really looks like it came that way because your top is chopped so it looks proportionate
^ The chopped top makes it look better Burnz... You can name it Toyota's new "smart" truck or penny hilux racer! Sorry but, that pink truck looks dumb! FOKAI12- chelu, just look for a regular bed truck and swap your motor in it...
i think bobbing looks funny on a mini, but thats just my opinion. but i like it on a wheeler, makes em look more like a RC truck. took about 12in out, right up to the rear spring perch, long bed. no i didnt even attempt to make it look preety, actually tried to make it look F'd up, going for a mad max kinda look.
Here's mine with the front bobbed 9" it's a Ex Cab on a regular cab frame. I've debated taking about 5" out of the rear. Let me know your opinion. Here's one I found a few years ago online.
