Alright so my truck sometimes starts to kick and when it does that, theres black smoke coming from the exhaust, steam coming from the muffler heatshield, the smoke from the exhaust stink, the sound of the exhaust is way beyond muffled. also there will b times that the truck will die on me if im not pressing the gas. the problem gets resolved when i pour in fuel system cleaner... does anyone have a diagnosis

Another Socal member. I can take a look at your ride this weekend. Sunday most likely. I'm in Chino.

Have you checked all your plugs and wires?

but will the catylic converter affect the performance of the truck, like when i floor it, it feels like its trying to push through something and then it goes.

ya, it really should be called a catalytic filter.

if your car runs rich or burns oil it can clog the cat really fast. which will be a blockage, or too much back pressure.

i would check the basic tune up stuff first(plugs, wires, vac lines), then blame the cat if things continue.

Yea a clogged up or damaged cat can cause just that. The filters that are in the cat go bad over time & break apart thus causing your truck to run like ass!! Unless youve welded your cat on it should unbolt & you can check it out.

really hes just talking about pulling it off and inspecting it.

i bet a emissions testing place could tell you if its bad or not, not really sure if there is a visual way to check a cat.

how well maintained is your truck?

could also be a crapped out spark plug wire, couple clogged vac lines, non functional emissions equipment...

the best way is to eliminate easy stuff till you find the problem, dont assume the cat is bad cuz we said it sounds like it is, based off of a text discription of said symptom.

lol yea i hear you, but honestly the dude that had this truck before i did ran it pretty bad, it needed a new clutch kit, slave cyclinder, rear transmission gasket, i havent had the money to get the rest of the engine checked out but i need a new muffler also because the one on there now has holes in it

i say go buy a manual and a cheap set of tools and start doing tune up stuff.

plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil change+filter, fuel filter, vac lines, ect.

you will be amazed at what happens from a few cheap fix's.

google is your friend, and searching here for "manual" might turn up some interesting links.

like autozone has a online manual, but there are MUCH better ones out there
