hey there i have an 84 yota hilux 2wd and since i had bought it i was considering an engine swap for it. till recently it took a dump on me so i have since parked it in my drive way. in the mean time i wanted to know your guys thoughts and opinions on what my best option would be? want to stick with a toyota engine. i want something with more power to it, so what would be my best bang for my buck? i was considering the 7m-ge but im not sure if its a direct fit? i want something with minor or close to no modifications needed. and i dont want any turbos as i am more of an n/a person. any help would be greatly appreciated guys. thanks

7mge's aren't to powerful, even with cam and other upgrades. 1jz would be a good swap but idk if a n/a one would be worth it. But its still a better motor than a 22r?

Maybe a 3rz since you want it n/a, or a 1uz like turbo dave

Engine swap with minor to no modification? Just do a built 22r. All swaps that I know of require decent to heavy mods.

Best option for an easy swap and no modifications like chopping or adding a ecu and harness mounts and what not like dillin and truck action says a built 22r .I've enjoyed mine for a long time keep the compression realistic and it will be fun motor you won't be a top speed monster .but around town and 1 st thru 3 rd is surprisingly fun

From what I've gathered, a 3SGE will fit a Y series bellhousing, one bolt won't line up (like that's a big deal) and you'll need a wider spigot bearing. And the distributor has to be moved or create a recession in the firewall. Not sure about engine mounts though. Oh and then there's the surge tank and fuel pump. An Uncut loom will be a piece of piss to mount (cable ties!)

No matter what you decide remember this is a 4 banger, and not a modern one at that. No multi valves no DI, and no VVTI. You can make decent power with the 22R but plan on spending a lot of money to achieve it. Thats the reason we choose these little trucks, not the power or performance but the fun we have trying to get there. Look at it as a learning curve.

INHO a built 22r wuold be the safest route. But i am not about safe so a 2jz tt is where its at tho.
