Hi. I have an 83 4x4. Recently the the battery and brake warning lights have been staying on after starting the truck and while driving. Has anyone else had this problem before? I checked the fuses and they were all ok. Not sure if it is a fusible link, voltage regulator, the discharge light relay or a short in the wire. My thought is a short since the brake warning light is on as well. Any help is appreciated before I begin looking for a short. Thanks.

 

Your charging system has failed. The brake & battery light isn't a short thats how the truck tells you its not being charged.

 

Is it struggling to turn over wen u start it??

 

Im 99% sure its just the alternator. Take it off and have it checked to see if its charging.

 

Thanks for the replies. It is in fact the alternator. I have ordered a new one.

A friend told me a good check is to tap it with a hammer and you will here the engine noise change as it picks up the load of the alternator and the lights will turn off. That is exactly what happened.
