bagging options

    Just asking a Newb question so it will be posted for people to read without re-asking..

    Bags,

    for the rear, what are the cons of a mono-leaf in the rear?

    obviously a link would be best. But With the cost/ease of using a mono leaf i ask, would the axle wrap be horrible with a mono leaf? would it be way to soft/too much body roll in the back with the mono? will the leaf break really easy? if going mono leaf.. would adding ladder bars remedy most of the cons of a mono-setup?

    For the front, i saw a gutted mid-80's P/U with bags front and rear in the junk yard the other day, or what was left of it.. on the front he simple removed torsion bars and added bag brackets to the front.. using the stock suspension with the funky bar going towards the front bumper.. instead of adding the extra beam to the lower control arm removing the factory bar going forward, or making a complete new one

    So point being, how well would the stock suspension hold up to the extreme articulation of bags instead of intended stock amounts? i assume the bar design the factory uses wouldn't like it, but how bad would this be on it? How low does the factory suspension get at full compression (this person had the inner fenders removed for clearance)?

    this truck had a mono-leaf rear, and a retarded hack notch job also...

    I am planning on doing a setup like twisted minis for the lower control arm, not sure on my rear (maybe supra IRS, kinda plentiful in the yards here need to measure it up) but saw this and just decided to get it out there to see what information people have on this setup, or for the people without a welder/fab skills/whatever that might try to use stock components with bags.. why they could, should or shouldn't, and all the people just wondering, so they know.

    ANY FAQ on bags with toy suspension we could add?

    First of all if you don't have access to a welder or if you don't have any fabrication skills then don't attempt it. The way you described the front, it sounded like it should using stock components. and for the back. Don't mono leaf it because if you just mono leaf it and throw some bags on top of the axle that just shows thats you're an cheap ass idiot who is too stupid to know how to build a descent set up. If you're gonna do a job then don't half ass it, do it right! Another thing to think about if you're thinking about doing a mono leaf on something. When you only have one leaf spring the spring is going to de-arch, when a spring does that it has more of a tendency to snap. I know, now you're thinking what about people who take 4x4 springs and get them arched more? Well usually when you take springs and get them arched more they will add more leafs so it will be stronger. Of course 4x4's are trying to get higher so it really doesn't matter. So the moral of the story, if you want a bagged truck then be prepared to pay if you're going to play. If you don't have the money then don't attempt it, nothing is worse than having an unsafe truck on the street because you're endangering your life and everyone elses just because you think you look cool and can tell all of your friends you have a bagged truck.

    Ben, the rear mono leaf setup will result in a horrendous amount of axlewrap probably resulting in the replacement of one or more u-joints before you finally decide to fix the problem (not to mention wheel hop/ traction issues). Also, it is entirely possible to break a leaf pack (mono or not). The use of a ladder bar setup would solve the axle wrap problem, which would lower the chance of a snapped spring by 75% or more, but if you are going to build a ladder bar setup, you may as well build a 4 link.

    As far as the fronts, if you leave the bars connecting the lower control arms forward to the frame, the worst that will happen is that you will limit how far the truck will lay out before the bar on the driver's side will hit the pitman arm on the steering box. You will probably never break these components, they are pretty stout. Although you may wear through the bushings faster.

    yell at the dude from the junk yard, not me. i didn't do that setup and not planning on it. The rear leaf spring with ladder bars are what i was thinking about for my setup and didn't know about it yet,i had seen a post or two referring to a mono setup. i thought about two leafs because of the concerns i had about breaking, too soft, and whatever else i asked about.. that's why i asked as well as to get it posted so people that might be thinking about it know they shouldn't and why.

    i have a welder, fab skills and all that just been into 4wd prior to this, just asking a question because im SURE that there are people without those things wondering what and if they can do it.. because when there is a will they will try to find a way, wether they should or not. If this post is more then just hell no you shouldn't do it and tells WHY then these people have a chance to read WHY and hopefully WONT do it that way or might get enlightened into the less expensive or easier ways to do things on their minis

    damn flammers, lol. im also on pirate4x4 and understand the reason to flame, but i just wanted to get some FAQs answered or at least asked.. thanks lit

    I was in no way trying to bite your head off or insult you. If you're not planning on doing that setup like you said you weren't then why would you take offense to my comment about it? I was just trying to get a point across because you would be surprised at how many times you can tell a person not to do something and they will go and do it anyway only to waste more time and money to go back and fix everything the second time when they could've done it right the first time.

    Bags over bars and shocks off the notch to the bars. rides nice.

    the reason i thought you directed it at me is the way i read the "you" like saying you should, or one should, a person should, etc. anyways they way things are said sound different when read i guess..

    and i said what my plans were in the first post.. but i was just asking about the other ways i have seen or other people might think of doing it, and why/why not, etc. BUT ENOUGH OF the blah blah bitch bitch bitch, lets get some TECH. going on, as it was the whole point of making the post so people can read the information.

    . . . without going to far or pointing fingers, and raping the thread. I totally take great pride in being a contributing member of this site. Saying this and knowing that this is my first choice of places to visit for accurate, no bull**** and no fighting. I find many of the members here to be professionals and people containing accurate and meaningfull information, and I think we can pride ourselves in providing usefull, truthfull, and respectfull feedback in all of our forums and I would love to see this continue. Once again, not picking on anyone, I just want to be part of a site and group of people that strive to be and do the very best and treat everyone else as family regardless of the stuff we ask sometimes and the things we do. I totally respect everyones opinion on here even if I dont always agree with it. In saying this lets stick with the awesome task of building our rides with the help of our fellow members and friends and continue showing them proudly for everyone to see !

    I guess it all depends on who you are, and what your situation is.
    For me, I will be bagging my truck, leaving the rear leaves and front torsions in place. Where I am, we're not allowed to cut our chassis, so I can't have a notch if I actually want to be able to drive it anywhere, and airbags are only legal, if they are a secondary form of suspension.
    In the rear of my truck (83 hilux) I have removed the load springs, flipped the remaining 3 upside down, and bolted it all back to the main leaf, with 1.5" blocks. All I have to do is ditch the 1.5 blocks and throw in 3" ones, and it's diff on chassis. I don't get any axle tramp or anything like that, but still allows enough movement for me to get lift from bags.

    That sucks! I'd be an outlaw for sure. My junk would be cut to hell, layin frame & body dropped.

    Out here it's illegal to change the ride height of your vehicle while driving, I've never been busted but my buddy John has been pulled over a bunch of times in his bagged Monte Carlo. Once for bouncing the front end off the ground while diving, a couple of times for three wheeling & more than a hand full for draggin frame, but the cops have also impounded his car once too.
