The bad news is that my charge and brake idiot lights came on when I had high revs the other day. I figure it's a voltage regulator issue. The good news is that my friend who used to have an '84 gave me a spare voltage regulator. The bad news is that they went to a different, internal regulator in '85. The good news is that I have one of those too, in my parts truck, and it came out no probmem. The bad news is that Pablo's alternator won't come out. It looks like the pivot bolt is shorn off somewhere inside there. The good news is that I've got the bracket from the parts truck too, so I can remove Pablo's bracket with the alternator attached and swap that out too. The bad news is that two of the four bolts holding on the bracket are engine mount bolts, and I ran out of time before I had to go places. The good news is that I haven't sold the Subaru yet. Hopefully tomorrow I can work this out.
Okay, all's well that ends well. The old alternator and bracket came out and the spares went in and work fine. It turns out there was no pivot pin. I just drove to Chicago and back like that. I'd still like to know why the brake light came on too.
