im sure a few other guys will chime in. but a stick came in your truck all thru 89-95, so pedal assembly, shifter, clutch lines, ect can be sourced from a parts truck. any W series 5 speed would be good. w50, 52, 55, 56 are all the same size. W58 is a slightly shorter and has a slightly different shifter location and actual shifter arm. In 92 electronic speedometer became standard so you'd need parts installed onto the side of an older trans to work your gauge, or swap to an 89-91 gauge cluster and plumb a speedometer cable.
Your also going to need the driveshaft out the 5-speed as well too, the automatic driveshaft is shorter.
The crossmember will work, the 5-speed tranny bolted right up to it on my truck. The driveshaft was something I didnt think of either until I went to install it lol.
swap All correct and also I think you might need the mounting plate that mounts to the cross member.I've done a few 4 speed to 5 and a couple auto to man so I might be mixing them but I seem to remember that autos plate being short thats why the shaft is longer.I think.
W58 Get a manual transmission mount. You will be lengthening your driveshaft by an inch or two, so measure it first. Mine needs to get shortened... and of course, balanced. Depending on what year W58, shifter location may vary. Mine's a SC300 W58 without the remote shifter, so it was close to my bench seat. I flipped the shifter arm forward so i can clear second gear and still reach my pedals. I need bucket seats. So measure and cut hole after the swap is in, makes it so much easier. Some early W58's have the shifter up front like the regular W5x's in the trucks. If I had bucket seats and turned my shifter around, it'd be right in my hand. Jump the parking/ neutral switch, and drive so you can use cruise control. Reverse, wire that into the reverse switch on the transmission. Depending on your transmission and sensor, it may be off. I'm reading 83.3% of actual road speed. My bellhousing came from a 22R W4x series transmission. Somehow it worked. Maybe it was 22RE. Same engine pattern, yes, but the W4x part still matched my W58. I was surprised. I got an Exedy Master Cylinder, Slave Cylinder, and OEM replacement clutch all from Amazon. Works well and I drive the piss out of it. I got a Brute Force OEM replacement flywheel on Amazon. I didn't use a hard line for the clutch, it was impossible to find in my area. So I got a stainless steel braided line made. I think mine was 4ft long, and that's cutting it really really close. Too tight of a fit and hung too close to my engine. I think 5-6 ft of line would be plenty and you could use rubber wrapped metal clamp things to hold it to the firewall to keep it clear from everything. You'll need matching fittings too. Any race shop should hook you up. My local one back home got it all for $60, made. No teflon on the fittings either. Buy the correct transmission fluid, Toyota doesn't work with GL-5, it'll eat you synchro's alive. Find GL-4, it'll be worth the find. The automatic transmission mount's plate thing is mounted lower than the manual one. and the holes are completely off and different. So find a manual one to be secure and correct. Wouldn't it suck to make a shift or drive under load and have your transmission break loose? Find a good parts store that carries really high quality metric bolts that are equivalent or better than the bolts holding the motor to the bellhousing. I couldn't use two of the ones from the auto's bellhousing, so i had to buy two longer ones. Get the right pitch and thread, it'll save your ass. When you install the transmission, tail end first into the crossmember, clock the top of the transmission 45* towards the driver side, then it'll clear the body and fit under neath as you slide it towards the rear. then you can sit it upright. Took me about 6 tries, almost lost my thumb or the W58 falling on my chest. Bellhousing bolt install and/ or removal. Use several extensions and a swivel, go up along the side of the transmission. I spent about 3 hours sitting on top of my motor trying to figure out how to get any sort of wrench or socket on the top few bolts with no success. I sat under the truck and looked up the side of the bellhousing and bingo, slid my extensions, swivel, and socket up there. And bingo, perfect alignment. Get a breaker bar, a 3/8's ratchet and a 1/2's ratchet can only help your forearms so much. What did I learn from my timing chain a few years prior? Craftsman tools. Broke two and was stuck using one ratchet to go forward, another to go backwards. got them fixed and replaced and man was it like heaven all over again. Red loctite on some things. Transmission shifter bushing and pivot bushing from Marlin Crawler. Both will be white. 6 Flywheel bolts from Marlin Crawler. These will take loctite if i remember.
Thanks to all you guys, gonna go to the local yards tomorrow (well later today) after school, hoping for the best, not to many pickups in jys in my area
old 22re celica's would be a nice way to find a W58. It's what you want. Balanced gear ratios and a good overdrive. I'm loving mine, just how my truck should've been from the factory. minus the lack of a Toyota V8 LOL
So if I get a celica with 22re can I get everything from flywheel, tranny, driveshaft?, clutch master, and other things just from that celica or mix and match from a pickup/4runner?
if you want to order a brand new flywheel and clutch, that'd probably be better. Tranny is all you're looking for from a 22re celica. The 22RE bellhousing and the W58 transmission. The clutch master and slave you can get brand new for cheap, i got new exedy ones from amazon. driveshaft you should probably find from a manual truck, that and the manual transmission mount.
I have... W4x 22R bellhousing (ebay) SC300 W58, non remote shifter (local, from a SC300 that became a 1000hp dragster, $250 i think. Hard to find for that price. you can use any W5x transmission, W55, W56, W57, W58, W59 are all good ones, so if you find a manual truck, that makes it so much easier.) Exedy Master Cylinder (Amazon) Exedy Slave Cylinder (Amazon) BruteForce FlyWheel (Amazon) Exedy OEM Replacement Clutch (Amazon) Marlin Crawler Shifter Seat Bushing (White) Marlin Crawler Shifter Pivot Bushing (White) Marlin Crawler Flywheel Bolts Manual Transmission Mounts from a manual 89-95 5spd truck. (pick n pull) Got my driveshaft lengthened and balanced for roughly $130. (Driveshaft shop) Get a 5ft long stainless steel braided line made with the fittings necessary. I got mine for $60 at a local race shop. That's for my clutch fluid. If you find a manual truck, just grab the hard lines and the mounting stuff. Get the pedal assembly from the manual truck. must be 89-95. I'm using the incorrect clutch lever in my bellhousing for my 22re throw out bearing, mine's from a 2JZ.... Basically I did a manual swap for $1000 flat. To make things easiest and use new parts, grab this from a manual truck. Transmission Bellhousing Clutch arm (what your slave cylinder presses on to push on the TO bearing to disengage the clutch) Pedals assembly Clutch hardlines Manual Transmission mount If it's a manual XCab, grab the damn driveshaft lol After that, you'll get a new clutch, flywheel, cylinders, and a few others elsewhere. That's all i could think of today.
LC makes a nice flywheel thats a bit lighter than stock. Cool part is the area the wears is replaceable for about $50 so if you find a used one with no life left for cheap, its not totally done for.
Alright found a 88 at a local junkyard with w55 5 speed. Wil a 88s driveshaft work with mine? I'm planning on getting everything from this truck straight to the pedals I'm gonna haggle them on everything and hopefully get everything for under 250. Would these parts work on a 90? I know it's the rights transmission since its cable driven speedo
The driveshaft and pedals from a 84-88 won't work on a 89-95. unless you separate the clutch pedal from the brake pedal... Straight down the middle between the two brackets, then weld some metal in between.
Good question, is it a single cab to a single cab? If we're talking strictly xcab's, that's a different story lol. my bad for the confusion.
