I was quoted $800 for my 1989 regular cab, long box.
Pretty affordable in my books. Just wondering if anyone can comment on the quality of their work.

 

Well being maaco all your getting for that price is them to mask it off and spray it with a single stage urethane that will last 3 years max

 

Yeah, maaco uses garbage paint, they do poor prep, dont remove ANY parts, their "masking" is a joke. You get what you pay for. The last complete paintjob we did at work came out to a little over $3700 on a 1994 lincoln towncar. Car was prepped well, everything that needed to be removed was, painted with high quality paint, basecoat/clear coat. You get the picture. If you plane on hanging onto the truck for any period of time do yourself a favor and get a REAL paintjob.

 

Are you planning on doing all he bodywork yourself? If so, you can always remove whatever parts need to be. (i.e. headlights, grille, taillights, etc) MiniTruckin' magazine has done a couple of articles on using Maaco before. yea dont let them mask for u they do a horrible job, but if u are just trying to cover up a **** paint job u already have and r lookin for a cheap fix go for it man

 

When I get my truck repainted.. I want no dings or anything... remove it all.. no engine either... roll that BTCH IN THERE! lol

but yeah, if you plan keeping her for a long time, quality paint job it is. I think MAACO did my truck several years back (insurance, dad, cousin wrecked truck, etc). Alot of overspray and ****ty paint. I think if they didn't spray the truck, I'd be able to salvage the factory paint underneath, EASILY.

 

Idk what paint they use but everything ive heard about Maaco was negative. I know shops get great results with crappy paint but most dnt take the time to prep sh!t proper. Last paintjob i had done, me and my dad did the bodywork, all the prep work, and removed anything i possibly could(was a car so it was headlights and tail lights lol) wasnt cuz we didnt trust the shop. Just it was short notice and the owner(a family friend) offered to do it for cheap practically free.

 

Too all the people talkn sht about maaco, have you ever got a paint job there ? well I have and after 3 plus years of being painted, never been parked inside, either in the sun or under a tree. the paint is just as good as the day I got it done ! I will agree that it is a good idea to tape some stuff up because they dont do the best job, but I would go back before I spent 2 grand or more on a decent paint job else where... so do whatjetas says, invest your own time into some prep and you will be 100% HAPPY ! well maybe 95%... my truck didnt come out the color I ordered it in, but I ended up liking it better...

 

^^^ I do like your paint job. The color looks great and so does the quality.

 

Maacco is not going to give you a quality paint job as mentioned before. Auto paint is expensive... try minimum of 120 a gal. plus figure another 150 in materials, then time about 40 hours with body work..if they have to put it on a frame straightner thats 75 an hour. By the time you factor all that in, its impossible to provide a quality product at that price and still make money.

prep and prime it yourself, mask it all off and remove parts that should be removed. They use Nason paint last I heard which is just a shop level of Dupont. People talk so much **** about Maaco but have NEVER been inside of one. If you go and talk to the painter and tell him theres a cash tip at the end of the job I bet you will be happy with the end result. Most of us won't own our trucks in 10 years so there is little reason to go with a high quality paint job. If it's a show truck/weekend warrior...spend the cash. If not, why spend it?

 

sure have i got my s10 painted at maaco, and like i said it was a **** job tons of over spray, the shop manager had his wat looked to be a 12 year old son taping vehicles off, just my experience

 

3 civics and a bike ok one of the civics was earl shwieb but they are the same dang thing. 1st civic, wrong color 4 shades lighter than ordered. 2nd civic took bumpers off to add body kit and the part not showing was original color (I paid for FULL prep) 3rd civic earl schweib clear came off in one year they repainted it for free and I sold it week later. Bike was painted by my wife as a surprise I never told her about the civics. Bike is now like a chameleon color it changes with the sun its rediculous kinda like they didnt even wash the damn thing and all the dirt and oil under the paint is coming through. Titan I guess you got lucky and really I think it also the people who work in these places, for most if they were actually good painters they wouldnt be working at maaco. Sorry if this offends anyone here who works at maacos you got a ****ty job.

 

Lol shot my last paintjob was with earl sheib paint! My dad worked there for 20+ years until they went outta business last year. He had his Chevelle painted there about 15 times and it came out amazing. BUT he did all the pwork/body work and removed all he could. Honestly their paintwork was never the greatest unless its their personal vehicles.

As some one already said, prep and primer it yourself and then take it in. Dnt expect to get show worthy finish for $800. Unless all u paye for was the materials

yes yes yes prep yourself, I didnt prime mine but I did all other prep.

yeah I got a little lucky maybe but I did do a lot of prep myself, like 2 months in my yard worth. my only complaint is the color did not match what it was supposed to be.

you want show worthy stuff, why did you even think about show anything for 800 bucks lol... 800 bucks will get you a slap in the face and thanks for stopping by..

either way whoever said frame straightner blah blah, you dont have to straighten the frame to paint a car. you dont have to have 40 hours of body work to paint a car... thats if you dont want any dents..

 

My truck's a work truck, going to be painted same color - white. I'll do any rust spots myself and maybe even all the sanding just before I take it in. I'm switching out my fenders and grill to a 4x4 style, so the new ones will already have the primer, just needs sanding.
Sounds like the biggest issue is poor taping/overspray.

My rig is definitely not going to be a show truck!! I just want the whole thing to be a uniform shade of white.

 

My gramps got a Earl Shieb job bout 10 years ago on my truck.

It is garbage!
Paint was pathetic.
Overspray everywhere.

Only the back of the cab has small spots of that original silver. If I could get my hand to it. I could rub it off with my bare hand and itll come off like glitter.



Ive heard Maaco have paint layin suns of a guns, but the prep time is nilch and they have garbage paint.

And to a point of referance. We (at work) just painted a 69 Mach 1 mustang a maroon red. Paint alone was 300 bucks. Nice stuff, but needed to be put on better. (its a little thin in spots)

That wasnt counting the thinner, primer or hardener.

 

there was a kid at my com. college that got a maaco job on his rwd cutlass. I coulda done (no, have done) a better job with rattle-cans. they masked the tires and windows...mostly, part of the lights and grill. the surface was so orange-peel it looked like they used wrinkle paint. they didn't even try to get the rockers or open the doors/hood, went right over the top of rust.
