A U-Pull junkyard a few hours away has listed a 1976 and a 1977 Celica in their inventory- they never say what engine or tranny is in them (you have to find that out on your own). However, as best as I can tell, either one could have a W50 5-speed.

I've read in a couple places that W-series trannys would bolt up to an 8R engine, and in other places that they would only hook up to the 20R's and up. I think I have an L40 in the truck now (can't remember for sure, it's gone through a few 4-speeds).

Is there any hope that it might work with my 8RC? Trannys are only $55 each up there, so it would be worth a little risk. I don't mind altering tranny mounts or driveline, so long as it works with the engine.

I gots no truck, for now
my 8rc had a werid 4 speed that did not bolt up to my 22r, and the 22r has the same bolt pattern as the 20R. so i doubt the trans in those cars would work for your 8rc. i dont really know any trans/bellhousing combo that would yeild you a 5 speed. i went through this when i was doing my engine trans swap in my 73 that had an 8rc in it. I ended up swapping out both the engine and trans to get the 5 speed and a 22r.

Bummer- thought I might be on to something there! Kind of figured though- when I was a kid, my dad and I took the bellhousing to the local junkyard and went through stacks and stacks of trannys looking for anything that would fit, but nothing did...

Would that make a difference on the 8R-C?

t50's aren't very strong. Still have the issue that the bellhousing is still for a 22/20R engine, or a 2/3T, 4age. Not sure if it would bolt up or not. GL

Strength wouldn't be a big issue- this truck really doesn't get abused anymore. It rarely leaves the pavement even. I mostly use it to drive to work and back.

i think the kept the bellhousing and change the tranny only
its longer so they notch the floor and mexicanized a trans mount
