i have a 88 toyota pickup runs excellent till a couple of days ago. the alternator is 6 months old havnt had a problem till the other day after i changed the oil and started it up the the engine started to die and the electronics were flickering. i noticed that the wire that comes from the main fuse box under the hood to the battery had melted and broke in two i changed it and the neg and pos connections started rite up. I went to bed woke up my truck was dead got new battery started rite up drove all day yesterday then i noticed that the charge light would come on and off then i smelled wires burning. i looked under the hood and seen the post on the alternator with the nut and wire had melted i just want to know if this is a bad ground somewere or something else?

Check to make sure that since the time you changed the alternator out that the wires haven't come loose and are grounding out on something. Did you move any other wiring around when you did the swap? Maybe it's shorting out now. That's about all ui can come up with, sorry.

As for your alternator issues, make sure you still have the plastic peice intact on the alternator where the wire attaches, if you redid the end or it has a bad connection it can lead to failure, also, just cause its new doesnt mean its perfect, have it tested. As for where to get a h.o. alternator, check Ebay, its worked hella well for me, I buy em for friends and people all the time and have never had a problem, my current is a 150 amp model, 75 at idle, 150 at 1150 got it connected to a dual alternator system running optimas with all the goodies Just go to ebay motors and type in high output toyota alternator and you shall see a good selection. . .

i extended my upper bracket to fit a 90amp @ idle '96 saturn SC alt.

and it sounds like your regulator died and its overcharging, id swap out alts, replace the main wire from alt to batt, and not turn it up so much till you upgrade your charge sys including big fatty grounds.
