In my new search for which 5 speed transmission to replace my 4 speed with, I turned from craigslist and junk yards with no luck to a local shop. Talked to a guy, and he said he wasnt sure but he might have thought that It was possible to convert the transmission itself from a 4 to a 5. He took my information, and is looking into it and what it would involve. This would be the most ideal route for me. But before I get too excited about the possibility of this happening, I thought i'd toss this out here and see if anyone has info they can share on this.

It seems not possible to find a reasonable priced 5 speed, even close to San Antonio Texas that is. Even Yoda Jims is out of stock.

    Not even a W58?
How much is it going to cost to add a 5th gear?
My automatic to manual conversion cost me $1000 or less.
    I even used a W4x series bellhousing.

Dude go to a junk yard, get a W50 transmission from an engine paired with a 20r or 22r no later than 85. Take the clutch pedal, clutch slave, flywheel, clutch master cylinder, TRANNY, flywheel, and clutch, throwout bearing, clutch fork. And install it all in. Shouldn't be to hard. I converted an auto A40 in a week to a w50. It cost me less than 50 bucks. And if your looking to get higher our faster freeway speed, scrap your clutch fan and install an electric with the fan blowing inside the bay. Not pushing air out. I've reached speeds pass 110 in my 77 pickup out here in WA.

I bought a parts truck ('86) with a good 22R and a W55 (I think) for $500. Of course these are parts to have on hand in case the 22RE in the good truck craps the bed, and I'm about a billion miles from Texas, but out of curiosity, what's the budget on this upgrade?

From 4wd land, 4 to 5 speed differences involve length. 5 spds are going to be longer requiring modification of mounts. Old work truck I drove 2wd years ago had the 4spd and actually did good. I'd just keep your eyes open, one will pop up.
I'm guessing I could find one here in boise for you but shipping would suck!!!!

Thankyou everyone. I havent been online in a while, Ive been caught up in a motorcycle paint job I took and Also i plowed a deer in the yota before Christmas. I got the truck all back togahter now and put on a 2" back exhaust with a cherry bomb muffler. It seemed to help the low end response But still definatly looking for a 5 spd. I appreciate all the offers and still not sure what my next move is. I would happily take one off someones hands but I'd need to know weights, length, and if the person i'm getting it from is able to get it on a truck. I'm okay to pay shipping up to 100-130$, But then theres the drive shaft issue's i'll be needing to track down. GIVEN that....I think I'll remain in limbo and just see what happens locally. Besids, I have 250$ worth of front end steering parts That still need to be installed like yesterday. no sense in having a 5h gear for highway speeds when I cant even hold the truck in a strait line on the road. But thankyou all. I will be getting back around and checking in more frequently

In Australia to go the 5 speed and column shift we go hiace van, but an easier option would be just to put a differential with better ratio out of something like the 1992 version hilux, so I have been told that the1992 axles and centre fit the original differential housings even back as far as the (lite) stouts

Man I've never even seen a column shift here in the states. But thankyou for adding to this thread. After reading all the new posts A new diff is definatly an option I should look into. I read on another post how going form a 4 speed to a 5 it made ZERO difference until the poster changed his Diff. But regardless, I was just taken by shock kinda when I made a call to a tranny shop and they offered to make a 4 speed to a 5. but they estimated even 400$ in Labor alone...I'll PASS and just buy a 5spd when the time works itself out.

In general and I speak through experience fifth gear is only like 500rpm different at 60 mph or 100 kph and in the australian corona and Celica (18r-c) had 3.9 and 4.1 diff ratio.
To put a five speed behind a factory four speed the engine was up a certain creek without a paddle as the engine worked that bit harder and on factory vacuum secondary carburetors it puts enough load to open the secondary at the 60mph 100km speed limit and thus used more fuel. All in all unless you regraph the distributor or go efi the engine will be put out of wack and a 5 speed is of no benefit and a waste of money as it ends up having the power of around it being fully loaded.
