been driving Toy trucks for about 14 yrs now. had a '94 4x4 that I miss dearly. was looking for info on my current repair on my 86 22R auto tranny, when came across this. hoping to meet some like minds and get some good input on a 4x4 project, and give what very limited info I possess when possible. have always used my trucks to haul fire wood, lumber.......other trucks. pretty excited about the whole Toyota minis thing.
thanx in advance.........hope this is an easy fix. got an 86 22r that I put a sleeve on HB a few wks ago (was leaking pretty bad after a couple yrs of drip drip) and just replaced head gasket on a couple days ago. pulled out of garage morning b-4 last and ran great. took down the road yesterday morning and will not shift into drive. shifted great 3 days ago. the push button cruise has been a li'l finicky when cold, but went from 1st to 2nd to drive without a hitch. I can't get an exact vacuum diagram of mine. had timing chain put on about 5 yrs ago right b-4 I bought it and appears to not be original vacuum line up, but worked prior to head gasket. I can get it to shift manually after it warms up a bit (in Indiana, been chilly last few mornings), but still have to play with gas pedal. It DOES shift on its own into drive, but is slipping or something. Kinda hard to explain, but if I leave it in 2nd, it will "engine brake", you can feel it grab and slow down. If I leave it in drive, it's almost like it's in neutral..........it won't slow the truck down when you let off, like a bad slippage. been swearing at my vac lines for 2 days, not so sure not something else now. Is my only truck and I build custom cornhole games and haul all our fire wood with it. can't find a Chiltons locally and Haynes just BITES when it comes to the details............ANY offerings, wire/vac line suggestions would be VERY appreciated guys/gals. so if i read all that right.... you did a head gasget and now the trans wont shift into drive? or wont shift outta 1st when driving? did you do the simple things first like check your trans fluid level/condition?
yep. fluid level is fine (better than when pulled head off) and is in surprisingly good condition. If I put in drive and take off, it shifts into 2nd just fine. Drive is the problem. I can make it shift manually by dropping it back into 2nd (at about 35 to 40 mph), then shift back into drive. I think it is actually shifting INTO drive, but just acts like it's slipping bad...........I've rebuilt a few 22r/22re motors and put a couple of head gaskets on etc.........but I'm at a loss as to how and explain this. If I put it in drive and let it shift on its own, 1st and 2nd are fine. Once it shifts to drive, it's all screwed up. Like I said, I'm scratching my head and getting frustrated just trying to explain it, but was a okay until I unhooked the throttle body/head and took it off. Thanx for any efforts, but one of those things you just about have to drive it to understand what it's doin'.
I'm not sure what's going on man... Transmission staying in some gear? Look for that cable that tells the transmission what position the throttle is. on my cable bracket, the top two is pedal and cruise, the bottom cable is the transmission one. the more you "loosen" it, the shifts will not shift earlier when your foot is down more. good luck. lemme know whats up. btw, you have the 22R/E with the 4spd automatic correct? more info, the better. I've been fed up with the A43D transmission in my truck for a long time, i learn it pretty well.
Yeah, it's the 22R auto w/push button overdrive. I actually thought about that lower cable (I only have the 2) last night, too late to mess with it. It seems like it did jump into passing gear too quick after I thought about it, but I didn't know if that would actually effect the shift. After a couple hours sleep, it donned on me that it was almost like it was stuck between 2nd and drive. Wouldn't go any faster than 2nd, but wouldn't drag rpm's down (engine break) either. Will mess with it this mornin' b-4 I get goin'. Let ya know soon as I do.......thanx .
linkage cable yeah, if I unhook the the cable I can put the shifter in 2nd and take off. After that, I have to manually shift into and out of the drive range until I stop.....then start over with shifter in 2nd, manually shift to drive etc. etc. etc. Still shifts into 2nd just fine on it's own depending on where I adjust the cable. BUT, when I try to adjust the cable loose enough, there's just not enough cable there. Haynes told me to open throttle all the way, then adjust linkage cable to where the metal stopper is 1 mm from the end of the boot.........problem is, I can't even pull it out far enough by hand to get it to the END of the boot, let alone outside of the boot with the adjustment. just don't understand, didn't touch any linkage, shifting.........any of that accept for pulling off the bracket with both the throttle and linkage cable still attached and unmoved......... signed, can kinda use my Toy now, but still baffled.
figured it out. the cable (to tranny) had slipped out of the crimped fitting at the adjustment end, right next to the mounting bracket on valve cover. had noticed last night late that looked like was "bent" there. was just enough to shorten cable, yet not enough to pull outer wires plum out of the crimp. got a band-aid on it, probably have to get another. thanx for responses all. Yep, will get some picks of the ol' beater on here. It's the 4 Toy truck I've owned (94 4x4 22RE, 85 22R, and this is my 2nd 86) and love 'em. Gave $600 for this one goin' on 5 yrs ago with 130 k on it and I've put another 70 k on it. it's hauled every bit of our fire wood (60 or 70 loads last 4 years) and this is 1st trouble with it...........she ain't purdy, but she's mine ;-)
