From what I've been reading and researching the '76-'78 standard front calipers are identical to the ones used in the '79-'83 models. But I'm not sure if the ones used in the 4x4's (4 pistons and same solid rotor) can just be installed in the same brackets where the normal calipers are installed normally, has anybody tried this before?

Not sure about that year. I know for the 89-95's the centers are different than the 4wds. Are you wanting to do a big brake setup?

My plans are just to do a little upgrade, mainly because I have a set of those 4x4 calipers somewhere in my garage. I just wanted to know if somebody has done that before.
And sorry for posting in the wrong year section.
