Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum here but I've been creeping for a while. I've been looking around a bit and haven't been able to find a definitive answer on what the towing capacity for the 3rd gen hilux is. It's the 20R 2WD, what's the max and what is usually reasonable for you?
What do you mean by towing? Most trucks can go 1100 pounds of cargo over the curb weight. The GVWR should be about 4100 pounds depending on if short bed or long bed.
I have a 1988 (4th gen). My owners manual says 5000lbs with towing package, 3500lbs without towing package M/T, 2000lbs without towing package A/T. Tongue weight should be about 10% of total load. I suspect the third gen is similar. But, check the owner's manual for your truck.
Here's some guidance from the "Trailer Towing" section of my 1983 manual: -Trailer weight, plus the cargo you put in the trailer, must not exceed 2000 pounds (900 kg). - When towing a trailer, the Gross Combination Weight Rating (sum of the vehicle weight and the trailer weight, each fully loaded) 5000 lb (2267 kg) must not be exceeded. In addition, never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) listed on the Certification Regulation Plate on the lock pillar by the left door. -Trailer tongue load must not exceed 200lb. (90kg) with the trailer fully loaded.
