    my 78 wont idle at all and i have yet to diagnose this problem.

    it will run smooth after about 1.5- 2 grand, but when it drops below that it sputters really hard/ baackfires, then eventually dies within a matter of seconds

    what i have done thus far
    *new plugs
    *new plug wires
    *new cap and rotor
    *new air filter
    *new fuel filter
    * messed with idle screw,

    no results

    was told it could possibly be the timing, but im not sure how reliable the source of information was

    any ideas, suggestions, diagnoses would help
    Thanks guys

    Without knowing how it runs when trying to idle I,m just guessing, is it flooding out?, hard to restart?, choke plate closed or partially closed, AAP diaphram in the carb ruptured and leaking gas causing flooding, distibutor advance mechanism inside distributor dirty or corroded and stuck in advanced position, vacuum leak(s) somewhere? just a few ideas to think about.

    almost sounds like a vac leak check all the hoses for cracks or splits could also be bad carb gaskets or intake manifold gaskets
    try spraying some carb cleaner around the base of the carb and around the manifold if the rpms pick up when the truck is running then it is a vac leak
