78 axle. Gear swap?

    '80 Sr5 Long bed
    Got a 78 axle in my stout. Looking to get some more pep outta the truck and am going to look into a gear swap...

    Problem is IDK what the rear end code/size is as I dont have the data plate off the truck cause I bought the axle off craigslist.

    what year gears will swap?

    I gots no truck, for now
    any, just take the whole 3rd member out and swap it. There are some axles outta the 4x4 or something that have a different axle spline count, but other then those any 3rd member will swap in there from pretaco down. You might have to grind out the axle housing where the ring goes through on some swaps, but we are only talking an 1/8th inch total nothing crazy
