Just trying to plot out the swap. Motor, transmission, and entire front clip, along with some other lil' goodies will be coming out of the 77' and going into the 72' (RN22), but was wondering if I should do the rear end as well. Not sure if they are any different. At least not offhand. Thought I'd check-in with the forum, before I crawl underneath em' both. Note: 77' has a stock 5speed (SR5). 72' (RN22) stock 4-speed.
and you plan to install the motor and trans from the 77 into the 72? i know it says it right there, but im double checking. lol. what size tire will you be running on the 72? and can you check the engine room tag of both trucks, and tell me what it says for the axle part. should say Gxxx for the 77, not sure on the 72. if it starts with a G, its not any weaker of a design...just a different ratio most likely. i know a G082 is a 4.10 ratio. G102 is 4.30 ratio. id assume a G062 is a 3.90 ratio. those are crossover numbers from shonuff. and as a tip, i would install the 77 tag next to the 72 tag in the engine room. so if you ever need info, its right with the rest. maybe do the same with the door jamb tags. but they should have the same physical size and installation points. most likely the same size brakes. i just think that unless you will run a super powerful built motor, or a very short tire...you should run the 5 speed rear end ratio as well. but that depends how tall the 4 speed gears in it are. or if it had the weaker rear end.
That's the plan. Just pull the 20r and transmission as one. Unbolt the front clip as a whole. Roll it out. Roll it into the 72'. Bolt it up. Then slide the newer motor and tranny in. I'll check on the codes tomorrow morning. Was just checking to see if anyone knew off the top of their heads. I don't mind having to swap the rear end, if I have to. Especially if the 4-speed's rear will just wind up too high on the freeway mated with the 5-speed, which is my main concern.
actually its usually the other way around if i remember right. they have a taller (lower number) rear end since there isnt an overdriven 5th gear. to reduce the freeway rpms. but either way, i would run a 3.90 gear if either of them are that. lol. especially if you will have shorter tires. i have 195/70/14s on the rear and would love to step the 4.10s down a bit. maybe even run a 3.7 if i find a supra lsd that ratio in the yards. especially since my W55 has a shorter first gear, i can still get off the line better. you can just post a photo of each tag if youd like.
I think I'm just going to run stock steelies for awhile. Keep things simple. I actually like how your wheels/tires look. Clean. Nice n simple. Old school.
thanks. its stock wheels and caps. im still debating a push through style bullet cap and chrome lugs. and remove the large center caps. the plymouth ralleys fell through. oh well. but i am running smaller tires. 195/65/14 and 195/70/14. if i still roll 14s when it comes time for new rear tires ill get something like a 205/65 or 225/60 probably. about the same height just wider. but i dunno. i may find some other wheels i like down the road. right now, i just wanna repaint these black again. old photos make me really like when they had some gloss to the black. its just bomb can. and i kinda halfassed it at that. lol.
