I had to take a break on my hilux due to other projects taking priorty. I have a total 5 yotas in my yard so I am always finding something to work on. I finally found a way around the clearance issues of a 22r under the hood. I found a 3RC in Redding, Ca.. a town near me. This engine came with its bell housing..thank god..because the four speed bell does not work nor does the 5 speed bell. Anyway got the 3rc bell to fit a 79 2wd 5 speed tranny with a little removal of some metal. To be more specific the five speed has a shaft output bung the sticks out into the bell mating surface and therefore has to be clearanced so i used my mill with a hole saw to create the same space and then used an end mill to remove the material inside providing a clearenace area for the 3rc bell to fit over the bung without interfearance. The only hurdle i have now is to get the throwout sleeve and bearing assembly to work between the two. Most likely will have to machine the inside of sleeve removing 3mm of inside diameter so it will slide onto throwout collar. If anyone has done this let me know. I could use some pointers... if I am the only one that has done this I can provide some pics and a little more info. will update with pics soon.
So when do we see pics of your truck? Whoops, I think I just found one in an older post. Looks like a straight truck.
tranny pic here are some pics of the tranny and 3rc and parts...the first pic is the assembly test fit together, second is close up of the 3rc bell mated to 5spd tranny center section and engine, the 3rd pic is the 3rc throwout and the center section it must be fitted to and the last pic is a standard R series throwout assembly for comparo. the 3rc is much longer and the I.D. is 3mm smaller than the accomping shaft in pic 3 .. they must be able to slide onto one another and then i will be in business .. just got to figure out how to machine it with out distortion or destryoing the throwout bearing mount surface....contemplating paying a professional.. i am just an amatuer machinist and this could jet ugly if i make one small mistake .. any input would be appreciated..thanks
as far as i know the 3rc was the only engine that came in the stout and was the first engine that came in the hilux ... according to my haynes repair book
