Hello just got my 84 Hilux 4x4 manual transmission not too long ago and noticed 5th gear acts weird. It seems to have a lag and just a few days ago i noticed upon engagement it makes an odd noise. also i tend to loose speed and takes quite a while to speed up. i was told the truck isnt ment to pick up speed quick but theres just something off unless thats normal? really hard to get pass that 55 mph point

Regardless of the "weirdness/lag/noise" you're talking about...

It might be as simple as you needing to re-gear or make more power...

My dad has an '86 4x4 in good running condition. When he had 33's on it, he could barely use 5th gear and was always downshifting because of the lack of power.

He went back to 31's and its a lot better in 5th, but a stock 22r is still no power monster, lol.

Is your truck stock? Or originally a 4 speed?

Welcome to the world of 4 cylinders and 4 wheel drive. The problem is you're trying to use 5th before you are doing 70.

The last factory 4x4 with a 4 speed came out in 80/81 and it came with 3.90's in the axles to compensate for the lack of 5th gear. Being an 84 that truck should have a G52 5 speed and 4.10's.

i guess i left out the size of my tires witch now might not matter but they are 31/10.5/15 (hope this is right im not used to reading truck tires jaja :/)

my i tend to shift to 5th around 45 mph and im just going based on the owners manual for "better economy and performance"

I havent checked my oil yet previous owner "chaged" the rear diff and engine oil so gotta do the tranny and front diff. is 85-90w gear oil what it uses?

Uh yea, I'm still in 3rd when I'm doing 45. The owners manual recommendations aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

Well changing my lubes helped a little on the lower gears but not as much on 5th but i needs a tac on my cluster not having one throws me off jajaja but those pick up better just driving it on 4th to reach 55. could it be a worn out clutch or flywheel that causes lag on 5th gear ? or is it just that its not enough power or tire wise i believe i have all terrain

Unless your trans is howling like a banshee or grinding in 5th gear there is nothing wrong with your trans. Its simply a lack of power coming from the engine.

Seems like the prob now happens in most gears except for gear number 4. I took of the boot from the shifters and u can hear that grinding noice so much more plus it squeaks. Just dropped it to replacr the clucth and other components and those it still. First pops out like crazy now it had never popped out. Took out the trans oil to see if it had metal shavings didn't seems like it. Seemed greenish and i use 75w-80 gear oil witch is yellow any ideas ?

How much miles do you have on this trans?

Did you try replacing the shifter bushing and seat? Maybe its not engaging all the way.

Other than that i would suggest a transmission rebuild. You might find a bent shift rod or worn out syncros. Hope this helps

Odometor days 208xxx alot of noise comes from the top like the shifter area. There would be times that it will take a good min to put it in first even if i moved it to a diff gear it would like stuck

I don't know much about transmissions or how they work exactly, but I do know 4th gear is a direct drive gear and isn't in contact with one of the main bearings inside. I know because my truck chewed up the input shaft and input shaft bearing and I had to get a full rebuild of the trans...actually TWICE since the first rebuild I had issues in 5th.

Did you do the rebuild yourself ? Im thinking of rebuilding mine. A coworker of mine works on transmissions he said all we need to do is switch out the bearing.

I didn't do it myself. If I had another vehicle at the time and a place to do it I'd have tried. I paid like $2k for a rebuild and new clutch back in 2009. Boomerang job 2x on warranty before they got it right the 3rd time with a whole new unit not a rebuild.
