there are quite a few different trannys out there that bolt up to the 22r, we can help you choose the right one.

that plate will still be in there somewhere, prolly on one of the fenders some where, every yota has one.

besides some possible driveshaft difficulties and possibly shifter location issues, you can drop a w58 right in. thats a 5 speed out of a celica 82-85 or a supra 82-87 (i think, not really sure when they stopped using em)

the gearing isnt so great for towing or hauling... unless all your hauling is ass.

most likely you have a G series tranny, so you'd have to get a W series speedo cable.

or a donor truck with a 5-speed for cheap might be easiest, would have all the parts on it so you dont have to bounce around from yard to yard for parts.

    um ya...

the w58 is a awesome tranny, its all aluminum, came behind a 7m, 5m, 22re. they are known to handle 400hp

i personnally beat the living crap out of the one in my street celica, speed shifting with out the clutch, 4th to 2nd shifts, reverse to 1st the hard way with lots of right pedal.

    with no side effects.

i also have one in my wagon and lifted celica, they both are working just fine and came out of unknown miliage cars in the junk yard.

the R154 is a stronger tranny, but you dont really need it unless you have a boosted 7m or better motor.

or if your gonna haul stuff get a w55, same basic tranny but geared for trucks.

His truck will not have the metal plate, instead it will be a sticker on the drivers door jam.
