    I think my 73 may be a L40, and that 73 might have a L50.

Rockauto.com does list a difference in some parts for transmission interals so I guess some 73s did have 5spd. unless someone swaped this 5spd in, it still has the 4F2 code on the vin plate.

Also if someones is reading this and know the answer to this let me know.

Will my 5spd out of my 77 parts truck with a 20r be a drop in for my truck, I have the 77 transmission, crossmember and driveshaft.

Are you talking about an early Hilux? didn't think they put the 5spd in the trucks until 75. Never heard of a 4F2, the early trucks had a W40 4spd, then the L42 4spd, then the W50 5spd, if its a 4F2 5spd from the wrecking yard outa something else I haven't a clue.

it has the G code rear end and beside it it says 4F2 and its a 73 5spd hilux, same body style as a 72-78. and has disc brakes, bucket seats.

I assume mine is a w40 then. I have the w50 ready to go in since my syncros dont sound hot

 Thats a strange one, as far as I knew the 5spd and the front disc brakes didn't come out until 75, 4F2:confused: haven't a clue on that one, but possibly someone stuck an early grille on a 75+ truck.

I saw a '4F2' code transmission in a 75 lux in a junk yard once (the code was listed on the ID plate in the engine compartment). I seem to remember it looking like the L4# series transmission. I pulled the shift knob off it, and it depicted a four speed. I also grabbed the shift arm, because it was chrome, and it was setup the same as my L43 (side loader). I didn't think to check it further and assumed it was an alternate naming convention.

I believe the L50 has the shifter on top of the transmission, as opposed to the side like the L4# transmissions.

I think my 73 is a sideloader, but I dont have the engine bay vins to it anymore.

the 4F2 was beside trans/axle on the engine bay vin plate. the door jam vin plate said may 73. It is a 73 because I could tell from the cab and the bed, gas tank on left side, 4 side hooks, 3 tailgate hooks. 18r biggerradiator.

It is for sure a 5spd, it goes in all 5 gears fine, even looks like a stock shift knob that has the 5 layout, I havnt seen the title, build date could be a 73, and be a 74 model, but I think in 74 they changed the gas tank to the passenger side
