Not having a tach was driving me crazy so I found a 4runner cluster in the local junkyard and here's the install. I found tons of posts on how to tap into the coil for the tach but didn't want to splice into anything so thought I would try and use a pin off the ECM. Well that didn't work for whatever reason so I then remember reading a post somewhere about using the diagnostics terminal from under the hood so that is what I ended up doing. Then instead of messing with the main harness plug I just used a ring terminal and bullet connector and tapped into the back of the cluster. Lastly, the 4runner was a v6 so I had to recalibrate the tach by increasing the resistance by 20 ohms. Hopefully the pics are helpful.
Nice job. You did remember to change out your oil pressure sending unit before hooking everything up, correct?
Is the pic of the test leads where you solder in a 20 ohm resistor? I just picked one of these clusters up today.
It's easier than that... just rotate the circled potentiometer screw clockwise until the resistance reads 20 ohms greater than stock.
In tech info writeup section. Everything you need to know. Its for older model but still basically the same.
I thought what I did was a good, but brief, step-by-step because I couldn't find anything for my generation truck. If you need more details let me know.
Well what you did was good. I was just looking for something that really broke it down step by step with tons of pics. The thread on yotatech was just alot more involved dude.
Yeah, I used info from that thread and about 2-3 other ones. Ounce you start digging into it everything makes a lot more sense.
Just make sure you change the oil press. sending unit before you plug in new cluster. It was $50 from orieleys. And the tach wire can go ring terminal on the "P" phillips head mounting screw and route it to your diagnostic port with male spade connector. Good luck.
One of the easiest upgardes!!! You can install the wire into the blue terminal connector too. Makes it for a much cleaner install I think. SR5 Gauge Cluster Swap - How-to, with pics! - YotaTech Forums copy and paste above line.
So I just picked up the new(to me) auto trans for my 94 truck. I'm pretty sure this is a cable speedo drive: So what year 4 runners have the cable speedo drive. I have to make the cluster swap from electric to mechanical, would like to do the upgrade at the same time.
