I dont think there was a 5 speed untill they changed body styles in 79, I put one in my old 77. Bolts to the engine fine but since it came out of a truck with torsion bars the trans crossmember was in the wrong place.
I'm planning on the same thing. If I remember correctly a tranny from before 85 should bolt up. But I'll have to look at my notes I took when I get back to the shop tomorrow to know forsure.
it will bolt to the motor but 78 and older trucks are coil spring, 79 and up are torsion bar so the tranny crossmember is different
thankyou for highlighting that. So would the proper crossmember for the 79 and up tranny work on the 78 vehicle? Or is it just a simple case of minor modifications made to the xmember to make it fit?
we just modified the stock a bit on my truck so I never really looked into it. Now that I think about it my problem could have been the fact I went from a 3 speed auto to a 5 speed also. The mount on the 5 speed sat behind the cross member an inch or 2.
