Hi, I am in the planning stage to swap from a 4-speed to auto. My question: is there a difference in the lengths between the 4-speed and Auto? Can the driveshaft from the 4-speed be used in the Auto? Has anyone done this swap before? Thanks for any info.

If the trannys in the 84-88 are like the 89-95 then the trannys are different. I had a automatic in my 91 & switched it to a 5-speed...the automatic is longer & the shaft was shorter then the manual drive shaft. So in short if you do the swap then get the drive shaft too!

The auto is longer, if you want though the 5 speed is a twin replacement for the 4 speed.

simple cure is to find a truck at a junkyard with the layout you want but still the same truck.

    like:

if you have a 88 short bed, you need to find one with a auto.

but you may get lucky. for me it turned out that a 85 supra 5 speed was the same length as a 74 A40 3 speed auto.

either way having a driveline shortened or lengthened is fairly cheap.

So the w58 is longer than the w56? Or the 3-speed auto is just much shorter than the 4-speeds?

LOL, I'm in the other boat...the only things I have to measure are 4-speed autos and w56s!
