Ok so my trucks been sitting in the backyard a couple months now. And i really wana get it back on the road. I dnt kno much about engines so i need as much help as possible. Anyway before i put it away it ran fine then i started getting some leaks from the exhaust manifold. It seems the water was coming out as mist. And whenever i turned it off water would leak from the passenger side of the block. im thinkin one of the freeze plugs rotted out but i havent really had a chance to check. And well at one point the RPMs rose well over 2500 AT IDLE. It started making knocking noises then the RPMs slowly dropped and the engine shut off and wouldnt start again until it got about 20 minutes to cool down. and it ran fine. But after 5 minutes of driving it it did the same thing all over again. Ive been tempted to just start dismantling the motor to see whats wrong. Granted its got 405,000 miles so im not expecting miracles from it but i do wana see if i can get it road worthy again Help me out please!!!!!!!!
I'm really hoping its not a BHG. :[ Jetas, idk how much your budget is.. but the 5VZ-FE is hands down the best fix for a 3VZ-e. 3VZ-E's have BHG issues and doesnt have much power over the 22RE and good mileage either. but a 5VZ-FE swap will be a small project and will give you better gains and mileage. 405,00 miles?! holy snap, BHG maybe...
Well as much as i would love to do swap i cant. Im in Cali and well we gotta smog. To be honest i just needa car to get around in. Im hoping its not the head gasket either but its not a far shot with this dam engine
from the sounds of it, as well as the engines reputation i'd say headgasket. maybe you could have a head gasket party and do yours and your friends 79 at the same time.. lol
Sh!t i didnt even think of it!! i mights just invite some of the cali guys on here to help HAHA. Seriously tho would those be symptoms of a BHG forsure? I mean i callled my mechanic but he never listened to what i sed. all he figured out was that 1 piston wasnt firing. So im taking this into my own hands if its not to complicated. I saw this thread and im just wondering if most of the steps and procedures will apply to mine >> Quikie head gasket<<
if i lived in cali would make my way to ur house n help u out i think its a broken head gasket andmaybe some loose internals bolts thats why you hear the knocking...and check ur oil toooo maybe its alll crapped out from sitting over the months and its too thick to lubricate...change ur spark plugs tooo...but anyway i would 5vz swap...no matter the smog test....i would just swap it...y wouldnt u be able to pass?
Honestly i have no idea why it wouldnt pass or why it even matters. But as far as i kno the engines im able to swap in are and still pass smog have to be motors that were offered stock in that model truck. So basically stuck between the 3VZ and 22RE Anyway, the sparkplugs have about 1500 miles on them at most. and i changed the oil about four months ago, and it dint get more than a few hundred miles on it
Where are you at in CA? I did the headgaskets on my parents old 4runner with that engine. I hated it, but it ran much better afterwards and fixed the bhg that it had. plus the heads had to be rebuilt.
you can still swap as long as: the motor is from a vehicle same year or newer all smog equipment/OBD is retained from newer engine fill out paper work
ok I'm going with the crowd here and saying head gasket. There is a couple ways to check with out taking the motor apart. First you can check the oil if its milky or looks like coffee with creamer then gasket. Second you can take a plug out take like a pocket like and look down at the piston and if the top of the piston is clean then its possible a gasket and maybe a cracked head. Might want to check the water pump and t-stat could be leaking coolant
a 5vze would be the best swap for ur truck but did u check the spots where reddawg007 hinted towards because thses are signs of a bad HG. look into yotatech.com some of the members run the 3vze in their riggs hope it helpful? and the clattering could be anything 4rm spun bearing to low oil pressure that lead to a burnt cam maybe?
